"Your problem solved not only did a total rip out of our bathroom but Dylan and Jared did all the work from installing the tub, the tile the vanity , installed all the plumbing fixtures , painted , repaired sheet rock , installed electrical switches , heated flooring and in addition they installed storm doors , deadbolts and cleaned up everything after each day of work , we didnâ t have multiple contractors in and out and in addition they installed a whole house water system, Dylan s expertise might be plumbing however he did a fantastic job on everything and he provided a detailed bill before they started and a detailed invoice afterwardsâ ¦ the cost was well within our budget and when it comes time to redo our basement, there is no doubt who we will call.. Highly recommend him and feel free to call me 843-694-7966"

"Javier and his team did a beautiful job. Our old garage was run down, lots of exterior rot, busted windows, and they made it look like a brand new building! The crew was here on time every single day and worked until the job was done, not skipping around other job sites. Great skills, great communication, and we have already discussed other future projects with them."

Customers say: Quality work

"First of all, the person who gave this artist an “F” for being out of the country on vacation recently, needs to be tarred and feathered. If you need your cabinetry right now, there is a store for you called IKEA. If you don’t mind waiting patiently for a beautiful, functional piece of art, then Les Dunne is the guy for you. We recently moved into a house with dated kitchen cabinets and not enough storage. There was an unused corner behind the kitchen peninsula that was screaming for a built-in and shelves but I couldn’t quite figure out how to tie it in to the existing granite or cabinets. I also wanted contemporary looking smooth cabinet doors, which are difficult to fashion from real wood, and floating shelves that can hold a lot of weight. Les answered my inquiry promptly, came over and took measurements, and came up with a design that checked all the boxes. The wood is cherry to match the existing kitchen cabinets (so I only have to replace the doors later to match) and the cherry wood heavy duty floating shelves have some racks for glasses. The price was very reasonable for the quality and amount of time invested. (It took a whole day to install it correctly since your floors and walls are never level or square). Despite Les taking vacation (like a normal person) in the middle of the project and me being excited to get it done, the project was finished in a timely fashion. It is absolutely beautiful and very functional and the quality is top notch. As expected of a quality craftsman who does everything himself, Les has a full schedule so I’ll have to wait a bit to have him make new kitchen cabinet doors but it will be worth the wait."

Small jobs welcome

"He built a wooden Cow fence, with horse wire on the inside - about 250 feet of fence. This is the second fence he has built for me. He is now building stairs of off my my deck, 20 to 30 feet high, with two landings."

"5tars Excellent Service- Richie and Chris were awesome. I recently hired Mr. Handyman to repair some damaged vinyl siding on my house, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the results. From the moment I contacted them the communication was as prompt and professional. The quote was fair. Richie arrived on time, was friendly and clearly experienced. He assessed the issue quickly and completed the repair with great attention to detail. The siding looks as good as new - you can’t even tell it was replaced. I really appreciated the efficient, high quality work and clean up afterwards. I highly recommend Mr. Handyman to anyone needing home repairs. I’ll definitely be calling them again for future projects. CJ"

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Asheville, NC

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
