"Vic did an excellent job for us on many projects--a major deck refinishing, rebuilding a 100+-year old window seat, resuspending sagging kitchen cabinets, repairing and replacing some outdoor cedar siding and stairs. These varied projects required not only excellent carpentry but also innovative thinking to resolve some of the construction issues involved in this quirky old house. We were expecting to have to replace the deck but he convinced us it would be better, and more cost effective, to instead refinish the old cedar boards, replacing only a few boards--and he was right. He could have charged us more for new decking, but didn't--this impressed us. He's honest, reliable, and good at solving problems."

"J J Construction owner Khoa Ha completely replaced my upper and lower decks with composite. He solved many problems we were facing with the decks and designed a system to deflect rain water away from the house. The upper deck was 48'x12' and the lower deck 14'x21', also replaced existing stairs, added bench seating. and lights. In addition he also repaired/reflashed metal roof on the lower back of the house and address foundation concerns. His team were great to work with, hard working, professional and courteous. We could not be happier with the results of this 4 week project. I highly recommend J J Construction for any project. We will be using him on future projects as well such as house painting, and some interior remodeling in the coming year."

Small jobs welcome

"Had a great experience working with Sean and Christian to fix my fence after a windstorm brought down a tree and destroyed a few sections of the fence. They were very responsive when I first reached out and came out quickly to provide an estimate. Got the job done in a day at a very reasonable price. And they did really high-quality work. Highly recommend them."

"I recently hired Kenny from Koala Restoration & Construction, LLC for a mix of interior and exterior repair work—including some light electrical, cosmetic upgrades, and paint patch-up jobs—and I couldn't be happier with the experience. Kenny was prompt, respectful of timelines, and delivered high-quality work at a very reasonable price. What stood out most was his friendly, professional demeanor—never pushy, and absolutely transparent about the scope, pricing, and any options available. Unlike many others, he never tried to upsell or push unnecessary services. If you're looking for a dependable, honest, and fairly priced handyman, I highly recommend giving Kenny a call. "

Blake is very detail oriented and is very good at translating his desires to his crew. I was also impressed with their work ethic. I really feel that I got my full money's worth from them. FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Snohomish, WA

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
