"WARNING - make sure you get a fully price estimate up front before they begin to do work. I brought them in to work on furnace/AC unit/split AC unit servicing garage (based on a promotional price for the first two). It was found my split unit needed a recharge for coolant and I was told that it'd only be 5 lbs of coolant and that this would be priced by the pound (which was reasonable). The bill came and they tacked on a flat charge of $219 for the coolant (this is in addition to the $129 charge to look over the split unit). I felt baited-and-switched. I also contacted them about this, and the answer came down to "This is additional profit for us added onto your bill." Not pleased. At all. Particularly since the coolant in question costs approximately $6 per pound and they only used 5 lbs (one would assume that the $129 charge built in enough profit for labor/licenses/equipment due to the limited time spent working on the split unit. Apparently not). Comfort By Design does excellent work, and they do stand by their work, but just be VERY CAREFUL in finding out what they're going to charge you, particularly if something extra comes up when they're doing a job."

"We hired Tyler to install permanent outdoor lighting to that exterior of our home. We were very impressed with him from our initial consultation and couldn’t be happier with our experience. He is very knowledgeable, professional and kind! We absolutely love the work he did and can’t recommend him enough for any electrical needs you may have. "

"Russel Williams Home Services is my "go to" window cleaning, gutter cleaning, and Christmas lighting. I've been using them for years and I won't use anyone else. They do a great job and are very reasonably priced (with discounts for repeat customers). Most importantly, they're incredibly responsive with great customer service. I highly recommend their services."

"John responded quickly to our email and agreed to come to our home a few days later. He communicated well, was knowledgeable and well-organized and completed the projects quickly. After John explained the extent of the damage to our post lamp, we decided to replace it with a solar unit at a later date, so he didn't repair that. But everything else on our list was taken care of. It all works well and looks great. We're very pleased. As a bonus, we found John to be a very nice guy."

"I had a disposal unit on its last legs, so bought a new one and had Norblom Plumbing come out to install. Before they got to the appointment, I got things ready for them by cleaning out stuff under the sink and unboxing the disposal. There I discovered I had a problem in that the unit had a 3 prong plug and my old disposal was hard wired electrically to the unit. So, I get to Angie's list and found Thor Electric in Lakeville. I probably could have done this myself, but at 65, like with the disposal, I hated the thought of being under the sink as I have done in the past. Plus, I probably would not have put the heavy duty outlet on that Kyle did and it would not have been right to code, so glad I did not do it... I called Kyle and he said he could stop over later the same day and possibly fit me in. I had called the plumbing company meanwhile and cancelled because of the problem. Kyle told me just use an extension on the disposal till I get there to do the outlet. I don't know why I or the plumbing company did not think of that, but I called them back and they had filled my appointment, but could come out at the next appointment, which was open because of me. So the plumber came, did his thing (review of Norbloom Plumbing if interested) and then Kyle came and put in the new outlet.Kyle was friendly, efficient, and fitted me in on short notice, which was great. I could give a grade of C on price, but as I said in my review of Norblom Plumbing, I am a little out of touch with how much these guys cost now, and they cost some dough to come out to your house and do a service call, fact of life like doctors and taxes. I always say i think it is better to have a skill/trade rather than 4 years to college and not know what you want to do. As an airline pilot/instructor/FAA Examiner I had both college and a skill that is hard to duplicate unless you have the experience. Same with these guys, they have a skill to analyze a problem and fix the problem correctly born over years of experience. They get paid for it, thus the A..."

FAQs for generator repair projects in Wanamingo, MN

There is often some confusion about the type of work these professionals do. They only work on electrical systems such as outlets, lighting fixtures and electrical panels – they aren’t appliance repairmen.

There are three types of electricians: Master, Journeyman and Apprentice. Electrical licensing varies quite a bit by state. Some have licenses for apprentices and some do not. Some have a master’s rank while others stop at journeyman. Despite the differences, they all require a minimum amount of experience and usually classroom time.

  • Apprentice electricians aren’t usually licensed and spend 4 years learning the trade. Throughout that time, they work on a wide range of projects to learn to become a Journeyman. They’ll do basic work like installing fixtures and replacing outlets all the way to assisting in wiring a home. Regardless of the type of project, they must always be supervised by a Journeyman or Master electrician.

  • Journeymen work without supervision. In a few states, this is the highest level available and they can do all levels of work from wiring a new home to installing a light. In some states, they need a separate electrical contractor license to run a business. In places with a master’s level, a journeyman can do all work besides design new electrical systems.

  • Master electricians usually manage a shop, design new electrical systems in new construction and oversee both Journeyman and Apprentices. They typically bid new projects. Though they focus on larger projects, it’s not unheard of for a homeowner to request a Master Electrician for a house call. If you do, expect to spend up to 25% more for the visit.

Generally, you don’t tip electricians, but that’s not to say they don’t appreciate it if you do. You can offer them something to drink or eat, like coffee and donuts. Most will appreciate it if you do.

The education and certifications required to become an electrician vary by state, though they generally follow this list:

  1. Apprentice

    • Does not always require a license depending on the state.

    • Learns on the job under Journeyman and Master Electricians.

    • Usually needs 4 years on-the-job training before they can test for a Journeyman license. Many states also require a technical degree to advance.

    • Always require supervision.

  2. Journeyman

    • Needs between 8,000 to 10,000 hours of on-the-job training and usually 500 to 1,000 hours of classroom experience.

    • Can usually supervise apprentices.

    • They can diagnose and repair electrical problems.

  3. Master

    • Achieved after an additional two years (4,000 hours) working as a Journeyman and taking the Master Electrician Exam.

    • Besides diagnosing and repairing electrical systems, they also design them. In most places they run shops and inspect Journeyman and Apprentice work.

    • Not a recognized rank in all states.

  4. Electrical Contractor License is an optional license in some states for a Master Electrician to run a business. Some states have this instead of the Master license.

Electricians make an average of $26 per hour but it ranges with experience and licensing. An apprentice may make about half that while a Master Electrician may hit closer to $40 per hour. This figure represents how much they make; not how much they bill. Their salary is only one component of their costs. They must also figure in overhead, taxes, equipment, insurance and several other expenses.

Leave electrical work to the professionals. Electrical systems are complex and potentially hazardous when not handled and installed correctly. If it were easy, it wouldn’t take 4 years to become a journeyman or 6 years for a master’s license. If you are determined to forge ahead yourself, understand home electrical safety before beginning any project.Even for simple common electrical projects, a licensed pro is best. Not only is it safer, but contractors guarantee and insure their work. Hire a professional to keep your home’s electrical systems functioning properly and safely.
