"JD Hostetter did excellent work! They were good to work all the way through the process - from getting an estimate, to scheduling, to doing the actual work. The wood trim that they replaced looks very good now, and was expertly installed with a good fit and good weatherproofing / caulking. They were helpful when we picked colors for the paint, and let us know what color schemes are popular for our style of house. The work was done quickly when it started. Great job! Will definitely hire them again for exterior repairs."

"Dave did an excellent job of replacing my roof back in 2017. I was so impressed with him that I hired him to replace my father’s roof and repair his garage ceiling, this month. When I first contacted him to see if he could do my dad’s roof, he was leaving the next day for vacation. He was so dedicated, he worked with me while he was out of town and initiated the start of the work upon his return. In a matter of days, he ordered the shingles, delivered them on Saturday, and installed the new roof that Monday. He worked with us and the insurance company and made the whole process quick and easy for us. He and his crew were extremely diligent and professional. I am thoroughly grateful for all they have done for us. If I ever need a new roof again, I will without question hire Dave and Preferred Roofing again."

"We have used Russell Hill Contracting on two different homes - each resulted from an insurance claim. One for a total roof replacement, and another for all new exterior - roof, siding, soffit, fascia. In both projects, they were great advocates for us throughout the claim process. The work they did was great and they were sure to clean up thoroughly. I highly recommend Russell Hill Contracting!"

"Excellent! Very professional. Large crew...in and out in 1 day. They have done at least 3 other roof jobs in my neighborhood and came highly recommended. I can see why. Great price, great guarantee, quick, efficient, great clean-up. My only advice to anyone with tender plants or bushes like hydrangeas or azaleas that have branches that might easily break off is to warn them ahead of time to cover with "extra care" if these are in the way, or you might figure a way to cover them yourself. All in all, though, they did a great job of protecting my plants and bushes."

"All-American Restoration is hands-down the best company I have ever used for roofing. Brad is an amazing person and treats his customers with respect. We used him a few years ago to roof our house when we were selling it and found out in the inspection it had hail damage. The timing for the work was critical because were also moving to a new house and needed it done fast. His crew was out literally the next day and had it done the same day. We also used him to repair our existing roof due to some wind damage. He worked me in the schedule and fixed it before rain was expected. If it would have rained before the repair, it would have been catastrophic. His prices are very competitive. He is a good person and will treat you right! I HIGHLY recommend him."

"Blue Ladder was extremely responsive to our request for an estimate, working with our insurance carrier and timely completion of the job. We experienced a slight leak around roof venting shortly after the install and they were right there to handle it immediately. The roof looks great and we would definitely use them again!"

"It’s too bad Angi limits the stars to five, because our experience with David and the crew of Indy Legacy Builders definitely warrants more. In the past 18 months our home weathered several hail storms that led to insurance reimbursed roof replacements for all the homes in my neighborhood, with the exception of ours. After three insurance inspections, multiple claims filed, AAA was still denying our storm damage claim(s). About two months ago David was passing through our neighborhood, by chance he ran into my wife and before long our ailing roof became the topic of focus. I later met with David, and within a couple minutes it was obvious his knowledge of insurance adjudication, insurance law and building code was second to none. About two weeks later AAA sent out another inspector, this time David was on the scene as our advocate. In a very professional manner he ensured that the inspector accurately documented damage and provided indisputable hail maps confirming our home was in the path of the aforementioned storms. Three days later our claims were finally approved, three weeks after that a new roof and gutters was installed courtesy of AAA and Indy Legacy Builders. If not for David and his team, we’d still have a damaged roof and the prospect of having to pay for a new roof exclusively out-of-pocket."

FAQs for heating cable for roof installation projects in Zionsville, IN

A typical heat cable uses 5 watts per foot, regardless of the outside temperature. So, if your cable is 100 feet long, it uses 500 watts per hour. Expect to pay an additional $40 to $200 or more per month on your electricity bill. Be sure to turn manual cables off in the summer when you don't need them.

To install heat tape on your roof, place it along the lower edge in a precise zig-zag pattern to maximize coverage and heat distribution. Professional installers secure the tape with specialized clips that attach firmly to your shingles. This method ensures even heat distribution to effectively melt ice and snow while maintaining your roof's integrity during severe winter conditions.

Choosing between heated gutters and roof heating cables usually comes down to budget, appearance, and performance. Heated gutters cost less to install and blend seamlessly with your home’s exterior, making them a discreet, lower-cost option for preventing ice dams. Roof heating cables deliver more customizable and powerful heat along roof edges to handle heavy snow and ice, but they require more material and labor, increasing your upfront investment. Evaluate your roof design, winter weather demands, and energy budget to select the system that works best for your property.

Roof heating cables prevent ice dams by melting snow and stopping ice buildup at the roof edge. Ice damming occurs when melting snow refreezes on a cold roof—often right above the gutter line—and blocks water from draining, which can force moisture under shingles into your home. Heating cables maintain a warm channel that clears ice dams as soon as they form and protects your roof from water damage and structural issues.

Roof heating cables last between two and ten years before replacement is needed, wearing out faster than your roof itself. Their lifespan depends on climate severity, cable type, and exposure to physical damage. Consistent inspections and preventative maintenance—such as clearing debris, tightening clips, and checking electrical connections—can extend their service life and ensure reliable snow and ice protection each winter.

To safely remove snow from your roof, start with a specially designed roof rake, standing firmly on the ground and pulling snow downhill rather than climbing onto the roof. You can also apply calcium chloride ice melt to break up stubborn ice or gently use a secured rope from a safe vantage point.

Keep in mind that large snow slabs can weigh hundreds of pounds and pose a serious fall risk. If conditions are hazardous or you lack the right equipment, hire a professional to protect your safety and your roof’s integrity.
