"The laborers ranged from professional to very unprofessional - foul language, left lunch garbage, loud music, dangerous debris (wood with nails, piles, etc). A few were actually very nice. The initial phase of work was OK. Fixed a couple of errors promptly - first, they were required to install a perimeter foundation on a patio and had intended to not do that, but instead do an on-grade pour - the other was a measurement issue that was not their fault. The concrete finish work was done without homeowners required input (per contract), resulting in a finish that was vastly different from what homeowner wanted. Homeowners were around all day with the laborer and no input was sought. The company provided a fix by putting a top coat on the slab - I am hoping this will have acceptable longevity. Workers left considerable concrete dust, surface coloring dust and debris splashed on the house siding and door. The last phase was for stone veneer work. Company had considerable existing examples on the home as to what was needed. The work completed for this phase was by any standard, horrible. The work was viewed (and approved) by the Contractor daily. Many stones were not level, poorly arranged, many large gaps exposing the underlying concrete block, mortar squished in haphazardly with fingers, many veneer stones broken irregularly in many places and squashed into voids. This work had to be entirely demolished and rebuilt by another employee who was very good. Every stone removed. My experience was that the Contractor had to be "forced" to do reasonable quality - just plain reasonable, not professional or "good". Contractor was indeed polite and fixed the problems during a lengthy and frustrating process, though I personally had to watch the whole process and stop Contractor and demand that the errors be corrected. I got the feeling that the Contactor would have take any shortcut (at my expense) had I not been watching."

FAQs for landscape soil, sand, mulch and rock delivery projects in Binghamton, NY

First, measure the total square footage of the area you want to cover to calculate how much mulch you need. Multiply that number by your desired depth in inches. Then, convert the result into cubic yards by dividing by 324. If you're buying bagged mulch containing two cubic feet, divide the total cubic feet needed by two to determine how many bags to purchase. These calculations ensure you order the exact amount for complete coverage.

The best mulch type for your project depends on your landscape’s purpose and design. For landscaping, shredded hardwood, black mulch, and red mulch provide long-lasting beauty, adequate coverage, and affordability at $40 or less per cubic yard. Other excellent choices include bark, wood chips, compost or manure, and straw. Each option offers distinct benefits in nutrient delivery, weed control, and moisture retention, allowing you to match the mulch to your garden’s specific needs.

The recommended mulch depth is between two to three inches. Installing mulch at this depth helps trap moisture, suppress weeds, and insulate plant roots, ensuring vigorous garden health. Applying less than two inches diminishes protection, while more than three inches may suffocate the soil. Follow this guideline to achieve adequate coverage and strong plant development.

One cubic yard of mulch covers 100 square feet when applied at a 3-inch depth, 161 square feet at a 2-inch depth, and 324 square feet at a 1-inch depth. Use these figures to calculate the required amount for your project by matching the desired thickness to the total area.

The ideal time to lay mulch is during seasons that enhance its benefits–summer for improved moisture retention, fall to maintain soil warmth, winter to insulate perennials, and spring after the ground has thawed for optimal nutrient absorption and weed control. This seasonal approach helps maximize your mulch application's protective and aesthetic qualities.
