"Over the past 16 months Ryan and Jeremy have had them installed new wall ovens, transformed a built in ironing board cabinet to shelving, install shower grab bars, and removed/replaced a deteriorating entryway porch ceiling and its light fixture. These 2 fellows demonstrate excellent workmanship at very reasonable prices and are happy to commit to providing topnotch results!"

"From start to finish, Rhode Island Appliance was a joy to work with. Maria set up the appointments, and Frank did all the hard work. He helped us pick out our new washer dryer and installed it for us; that makes it sound like an easy job, but it was NOT. The cords in the back of the appliances gave us an issue, but he worked endlessly to make sure that our new pieces fit seamlessly into our laundry closet. The install should have taken way less time than he actually spent doing it, but he would not give up and spent extra hours of his time to make sure the job was done perfectly. Furthermore, he gave us great advice about other appliances for our house. Frank is a true consummate professional, and was pleasant and kind to work with despite all the setbacks. I am happy to give my business to this company and will, most certainly, call them again if I am in need of an appliance, or if I need help, advice, or repair. Thank you, Rhode Island Appliance, for your friendly, exceptional service!"

"Pros: Very responsive Fair price Good safety consciousness re: COVID Cons: Many avoidable mistakes, which made a 3-hour job take 2 days Bad attitude Very mixed experience. Junior called me right away with a fair quote and good availability. He arrived just when he said he would. He didn't seem very familiar with either the dishwasher or disposal install, and seemed to be having trouble with both. I was in no rush, though, so this was not in itself a problem. However he couldn't get either appliance to power on. He made many trips to the circuit breaker before declaring that it was a wiring issue (even though both original appliances had powered on just fine before he'd disconnected them) and we'd have to have an electrician come out to fix the problem. I asked for his address so we could send him payment once the power was working and we could verify that the installations were good to go, and he took extreme offense. He basically accused us of not being willing to pay him at all, and told us to "forget it" if we didn't think he was "worth paying". This was ridiculous and unnecessary, and I insisted on getting his address so we could send a check. A few minutes after he left, my husband got off work, went down to check the circuit breaker, and immediately saw that one of the breakers had been tripped during the installation. He reset it, and everything powered up just fine. This was such an obvious solution, it's hard to believe that any kind of experienced installer would have missed it. So, the good news was, now we had power, but the bad news was now we could identify multiple issues with both installations. The garbage disposal was leaking around the top (where it meets the sink), so we couldn't run water in the sink at all without putting a bucket underneath. Plus, it wouldn't turn on, even though it had power. The dishwasher started, but then almost immediately went into error mode, because it couldn't drain. Turned out that Junior had incorrectly connected the dishwasher's discharge hose to the disposal -- he failed to remove the plug at the disposal end -- so the hose was blocked. Again, rookie mistake. When my husband removed the plug, and reconnected the hose, the dishwasher was at least functional. I called Junior to update him. He was extremely defensive, and argumentative about everything. He kept saying, "I stand by my work", and was unwilling to entertain the possibility that he could have done anything differently. He refused to believe that the electrical solution was so simple, accused someone else of causing the disposal to leak, accused us again of not planning to pay him, etc. I had to ask him to stop talking over me so I could even finish a sentence. He did come by the next morning, uninstalled and reinstalled the disposal again with a better seal around the top, and was able to get it working. I paid him on the spot, just as I assured him I would once the work was actually complete and correct. His foul mood was unchanged the entire time. So. In the end, we have a working disposal and dishwasher. The work could have been completed in substantially shorter time, and with a lot fewer headaches for us and him. Would likely not use again if there were any other options."

FAQs for appliance (smaller size) installation and replacement projects in East Providence, RI

Garbage disposals last around 10 years when properly maintained. If your unit is getting close to that age or repair costs are increasing, it might be time to consider a replacement. Regular maintenance and careful use can help maximize your garbage disposal's performance and help it reach its maximum lifespan.

There are several signs to watch for that indicate your garbage disposal needs to be replaced. Replacement may be necessary if it doesn't work even though it's properly connected, the blades are worn and causing delays in operation, a persistent foul odor that won't go away, or leaks coming from the bottom due to a compromised seal. If you're experiencing any of these issues, it might be time to consider getting a new garbage disposal to keep your kitchen running smoothly.

A plumber or handyperson can install your garbage disposal if the electrical connections are already in place. If you need additional electrical work, you'll also need to hire a qualified electrician to handle the rest of the job. Hiring local professionals ensures the installation is safe and up to code.

It’s important to avoid putting certain items down the drain to keep your garbage disposal running smoothly and avoid clogs. Expandable foods like pasta, rice, oatmeal, and bread can swell and cause blockages. Coffee grounds, grease, fats, and oils can accumulate and create clogs. Hard items such as meat bones, nuts, and fruit pits can damage the disposal blades. Eggshells, potato peels, and fibrous vegetables such as celery, pumpkin, corn husks, artichokes, onion skins, and asparagus can wrap around the blades or obstruct the pipes.

Not every sink is suitable for the installation of a garbage disposal. The compatibility of the sink with the disposal depends on the material and structural integrity. While many standard sinks support these units, fireclay sinks are prone to cracking under the added stress and should not be used. Confirm that your sink can securely accommodate the disposal before installation.

Choosing the correct size garbage disposal depends on your household size and how much waste you produce. A 1/3–1/2 horsepower unit should be sufficient for households with one to two people. If your household consists of three to six people, a 1/2–3/4 horsepower unit is recommended. FA3/4–1 horsepower model will be necessary. For larger households of five to eight people
