To decide whether or not a particular deck builder is right for you, you need to ask some good questions to get to know his work a little better. These questions are some good ones to start with:

Questions about the Deck Builder

How long have you been building decks?
Were you formally trained or did you learn through an apprenticeship?
Do you belong to any professional associations?
Are you licensed and registered with the state?
Do you have insurance?
Do you have any references I can contact?

Questions about Your Deck Builder's Work

Do you give written warranties?
Will this deck require a permit?
Can you estimate how long it will take to complete the deck?
Will you provide options for different decking materials?

Interview Question for References

Were you happy with your deck?
Was the deck completed on time?
Were there any unexpected expenses?
Would you use this deck builder again?
Would you recommend this deck contractor?

Interviewing this heavy is overkill if you only need a few deck boards replaced or some new deck railing. You will only need to interview if you are hiring for a new deck addition or changing to a new decking material.
