He took justifiable pride in mixing a very smooth mortar that looked to me like butter and was the smoothest I've seen. He applied this mortar in the grouting between the blocks and the space between the top of the stair below and the bottom of the cap for the stair above. The result is a very smooth surface between the blocks. i"
