"The owner, Ion, was very experienced and we spent quite a bit of time discussing the project and the various options for getting my desird outcome. The men who came to do the work also worked very hard. But, the problems came in the materials used--I asked for cedar--which were not properly kiln dried. Within days, al the boards began to "cup," which was part of the problem with the old deck (which was 25 years old,so some cupping would be expected at that point). Some of the boards were beautiful looking, while others seemed to be dirty. During the first week, two knots fell out of one of the boards leaving holes. The gate was overbuilt an immediately began to sag. (I had shared photos of gates that I wanted, and which would have been lighter. Finally, part of the design was to keep the original stairs but reinforce by sistering up the stringers. Instead of using one complete piece of wood for each stringer, they pieced together each stringer, making them not as strong or long lasting as they should be. The did rebuild the gate--it took several tries--and wasn't what I had wanted, but I had to accept it and it did work. And they replaced a number of the boards, but not all that needed replacing. A year later I hired a great painter who worked tirelessly to get the wood in a condition to accept an oil coating and eventually we got the deck to look very nice."

"Short version: They did a fantastic job and are deserving of all the kudos here on Angie's List. Excellent communication, top-notch work, very reasonable price-wise compared to 6 other estimates and professional in every single way. Don't waste your time going with anybody else.
Long version: Our old, gly, stained and weatherbeaten wood deck finally got to us earlier this spring. We decided that enough was enough and that it was time to replace it with something modern and fresh-looking. I called seven contractors with good ratings here on Angie's List. Six of the responded but the one that had my interest the most was Freeborne. I scheduled the estimate to be done when my wife was home on the weekend. Gary Osborne, one of the co-owners of the business came by precisely when he said he wood and did a great sales presentation, took measurements, LISTENED to what we had to say and made a few recommendations of his own. We agreed that going with composite decking would be the best, since pressure-treated lumber is far more labour-intensive after a year or so, and it deteriorates quickly. We settled on Trex Transcend's "Tiki Torch" for the decking, and "Vintage Lantern" for the trim, stairs and railings.
He said his price wouldn't be the highest (nor the lowest) but that there would be no variance to the price and no delays to the work (except if bad weather hit); both of which were important to us. He also stated that the lead time would be roughly 12 weeks, but maybe sooner. We had a drop-dead fully-finished deadline of Sept. 5th for this project.
We got an estimate in the mail a few days later, with a good price if we signed the contract within 2 weeks. We got it back to him immediately and we were put on his always-busy schedule.
After thinking about it, I called and asked about a few alterations to the plans and how much extra it would cost us. He did up a revised estimate for the extras; one of which I approved (a second staircase) and the other I didn't, as its size-vs-cost was a little too much. The revised plans went into the town and a couple of weeks later I picked up our building permit (the only extra cost to this project) and then the wait began.
In mid-August I was in contact with Gary and he indicated that things would begin the following week with the removal of the old deck and the new footings being dug and poured. Sure enough, right on time, the first crew arrived and within 3 hours the old deck was cut up and gone, and eight deep holes were installed in the ground. At that point the town inspector needed to inspect the footings, which he did 2 days later, and they came back the same day to pour the concrete. This was on Friday, Aug. 22nd. It would be an interminable four days until framing began the following Tuesday.
The construction crew arrived at 7:45am on Tuesday, Aug. 26th and by the time they left then entire frame was up and the first few decking boards had been installed. The following day all the decking was done and the latticework at the base was started. On day three the stairs were put in and the finesse work was mostly completed. The crew had a commitment for the long weekend and the last bits couldn't be done until the following Tuesday, but that was only a half-day, and at that time the entire job was complete, and better than I could have ever hoped for in my wildest dreams.
The construction crew was good beyond belief, especially the team leader who was a human construction machine. I asked for a few last-minute changes (wider staircases) and he was glad to oblige, without complaint.
There were a couple of small hiccups involving the town inspector's schedule vs their work schedule/speed but they were resolved to everyone's satisfaction, and the inspector even commented on how good a job they did. Very high praise, indeed!
As of this writing there are still a few post caps that have to be changed out (a mis-labeled box contained the wrong caps and I'm waiting for the new ones) but that's it. We paid in full, the exact amount that was quoted on the revised estimate.
I simply cannot compliment Gary highly enough. He runs a great company and his team do magnificent work. In all my years of dealing with service folks and contractors, I've never ever had a better experience than I did with Freeborne Contracting. I only wish they did kitchens, too, as we'll be in the market for a kitchen reno in a few years. THANK YOU FOR A JOB WELL DONE!
