"We moved into our new construction home in 2007. On June 30, 2018 there was torrential rain in the Des Moines metro, causing a lot of local flooding and flooded basements. This was the first of 3 occasions that summer when a small amount water worked its way up through a concrete seam in our basement floor. We contacted several local wet basement outfits to see what could be done to correct the problem. The general consensus from the majority of them was that we had more of a landscaping problem than a wet basement problem. One outfit even went as far as to say, "Take care of your landscaping and if that doesn't correct the problem, than call me". After a lot of research into Des Moines area landscapers, we chose Friend Landscaping for this project. They built up the grade around our house, installed underground gutters, built two small retaining walls and installed a French drain across the back of the house; all to force rain water away from the foundation of the house. In addition, they replaced all of the old landscaping with a clean, attractive layout and long-lasting materials. We've had several heavy downpours since the work was done in September 2018 and it is clear that the landscaping is working as designed and the water issue in our basement has not reoccurred. We highly recommend Friend Landscaping for anyone who has drainage issues around their house and would definitely hire him for future jobs. Bill kept us informed of the project time-line; and he and his crew always kept the jobsite clean and safe while the work was in progress."

"Richard Beeler is such a great guy to work with. He walked through every process so we were aware of what was going on and what to expect along the way. He always asked for our opinion, but we knew that what he suggested was what was best for our new backyard patio. His communication was awesome and I felt comfortable asking â stupid questionsâ . I HIGHLY recommend this company and will be using them again next year for more landscaping!!!"

"Max does excellent work. Very thorough from giving estimates to price of material, performing processes, to completing the job as you imagined it would be. Work is also completed in a timely manner as well as leaving the workspace very neat and clean. Would recommend to anyone and will definitely have him back for more work to be done."

"Jamie and his team over at Lawn & Landscape are ultimate professionals. They quoted me a price, and were able to level my large yard front and back, bury two tiles for drainage, and plant new grass seed in just 4 days. We were having issues with our backyard flooding and pooling, and that has been completely fixed, without damaging our existing fence. Best part? The final total was less than the original quote. I would and will recommend Supreme Lawn & Landscape to anyone who needs a landscaping company."

FAQs for interlocking pavers for patios, walks & steps installation projects in Ames, IA

To calculate your paver needs:

  • Determine how many pavers cover a square foot.

  • Determine how many square feet you need.

  • Add an additional 10% to 20% for breakage and waste.

  • Consider your pavers’ sizes.

Or, you can hire a local pro who you know will get the right measurements the first time. This way, you get your weekend back instead of spending it measuring square footage.

A pallet of pavers costs $300 to $700 on average, and each pallet covers 56 square feet. The exact price depends on the type, size, and quantity of pavers you choose. Buying in bulk can sometimes offer additional savings, especially for larger projects. Ask your pro how you can save on material costs.

To get the best prices on pavers:

  • Hire a professional landscaper: Pros often receive discounts on materials, which can make hiring them more cost-effective overall.

  • Shop at local building supply stores: Check for overstock or bulk purchase deals. Bulk purchasing can be more costly up front but save you money in the long run.

  • Buy directly from manufacturers: Purchasing from a local brickyard or paver factory can offer competitive prices, especially for large quantities.

The main difference between driveway pavers and patio pavers is their load-bearing capacity. Driveway pavers are designed to withstand the weight of vehicles, whereas patio pavers aren’t suitable for such heavy loads. You can use driveway pavers for a patio, but using patio pavers for a driveway could lead to damage. Always check the weight limits of pavers and consult with a professional installer to choose the right type for your project.

Paver patios cost more than concrete patios because the materials and installation methods require advanced techniques and skilled labor. They deliver enhanced aesthetic appeal and allow for easier small‑scale repairs without affecting property taxes. The higher expense arises from premium paver materials and intricate installation processes that deliver long‑lasting durability and design flexibility. This robust solution provides notable benefits over concrete alternatives, making it a valuable investment for homeowners.
