"My wife and I recently had the satisfying experience of engaging the professional electrician services of Autumn Electric Co., Inc. Our recent basement remodeling project involved very complex overhead lighting redesign and delicate, state-of-the-art, fixture installations. Autumn Electric's Dave Barsotti (Master Electrician) worked hand-in-hand with our creative custom lighting designer (Dave Konstantin). Barsotti followed the detailed design plans to perfection, while readily accommodating any and all of our "last minute" personal design changes. Barsotti, representing the spirit of Autumn Electric, showed the utmost concern to please his customer and do the job right, at the exact price agreed. Throughout decades of working with dozens of electricians, in dozens of projects all over this country, my wife and I have never encountered a more experienced, skilled, respectful or honest electrician and company than Dave Barsotti and Autumn Electric Co., Inc. In our opinion, you too will enjoy "Satisfaction Guaranteed." Fred V."

"I simply can't say enough about Frank and his shop and team. My wife and I have been going to his store off and on for probably close to 20 years. We've bought multiple lamps and lighting equipment materials from him. He's repaired many of our older lamps. ALWAYS such friendly and professional experiences. We did a major bathroom and kitchen remodel and he provided guidance, expertise and a great price on lighting needs for that. One doesn't need lights/lamps every day, but over the years I keep coming back because he's so knowledgeable, helpful, friendly and it's just always a great experience. I have NEVER been disappointed and simply can't imagine anyone else being so, either. Thank you, Frank, for being such a great guy and having such a great shop! This shop is truly an "old fashioned" experience in service and the whole experience - you just don't see this kind of help very much these days, and definitely not in a "big box" store. This is a great, small shop (but don't let that fool you - he can get anything you need!) and I will ALWAYS come here for lighting needs."

"Note that I selected and purchased the light, mirror, medicine cabinet, and accessories (towel bars, grab bars, et al.), which added $3,500 to my cost. Most of that amount was for brass accessories ordered from a boutique manufacturer. I have no doubt the amount would have been substantially less had I gone with mainstream, off-the-shelf items. My initial meeting with Mike Brennan, CDT’s CEO, was characterized by an open and very comfortable discussion of my goals, the selection process, where I would take responsibility for item procurements, and the demolition and construction processes. I was struck by the impression that CDT would be very easy to work with, and I wasn’t disappointed. (The other provider I spoke with never called me back.) A major benefit of working with Mike is that he guides customers through visits with four vendors to select tiles, components (e.g., tub and sink), the vanity, and the countertop. That “excursion” took about four hours. (In contrast, I perseverated for weeks over the items I was responsible for.) The renovation took about two weeks. As disruptive as renovations might be, this one proceeded pretty much as planned, and the inevitable hiccups that occurred were easily taken in stride. During this time, two of CDT’s crews worked on different aspects of the project. These people were knowledgeable, experienced, proficient, courteous, and respectful. The resulting renovation is beautiful! I highly recommend CDT for renovation projects, and I plan to use them in the next couple of years for kitchen upgrades that I’m starting to plan for."

"Jaye did another fantastic job for us replacing carpet with wood flooring! Beautiful work! Closet was a geometrical mess! He overcame that mess fine! Prompt, helpful and very suggestive! No "after mess" cleanup involved. A truly professional man!"

"Bull Run Kitchen and Bath completed two bathroom renovations in my home. They did an excellent job. The designer, Salih Coskun, went above and beyond from start to finish. In many ways he served as the project manager, never overlooking any detail. I am very grateful for his dedication and creative eye. The workers were wonderful. They did exacting work and the results were fabulous. The weakest link was the actual project manager, Murat, who did not do a good job of planning when to order supplies or scheduling which resulted in the project taking much too long to finish. The results, however, compensated for the process. Everyone who has seen the bathrooms has raved about them. They are truly gorgeous."

FAQs for generator repair projects in Burke, VA

There is often some confusion about the type of work these professionals do. They only work on electrical systems such as outlets, lighting fixtures and electrical panels – they aren’t appliance repairmen.

There are three types of electricians: Master, Journeyman and Apprentice. Electrical licensing varies quite a bit by state. Some have licenses for apprentices and some do not. Some have a master’s rank while others stop at journeyman. Despite the differences, they all require a minimum amount of experience and usually classroom time.

  • Apprentice electricians aren’t usually licensed and spend 4 years learning the trade. Throughout that time, they work on a wide range of projects to learn to become a Journeyman. They’ll do basic work like installing fixtures and replacing outlets all the way to assisting in wiring a home. Regardless of the type of project, they must always be supervised by a Journeyman or Master electrician.

  • Journeymen work without supervision. In a few states, this is the highest level available and they can do all levels of work from wiring a new home to installing a light. In some states, they need a separate electrical contractor license to run a business. In places with a master’s level, a journeyman can do all work besides design new electrical systems.

  • Master electricians usually manage a shop, design new electrical systems in new construction and oversee both Journeyman and Apprentices. They typically bid new projects. Though they focus on larger projects, it’s not unheard of for a homeowner to request a Master Electrician for a house call. If you do, expect to spend up to 25% more for the visit.

Generally, you don’t tip electricians, but that’s not to say they don’t appreciate it if you do. You can offer them something to drink or eat, like coffee and donuts. Most will appreciate it if you do.

The education and certifications required to become an electrician vary by state, though they generally follow this list:

  1. Apprentice

    • Does not always require a license depending on the state.

    • Learns on the job under Journeyman and Master Electricians.

    • Usually needs 4 years on-the-job training before they can test for a Journeyman license. Many states also require a technical degree to advance.

    • Always require supervision.

  2. Journeyman

    • Needs between 8,000 to 10,000 hours of on-the-job training and usually 500 to 1,000 hours of classroom experience.

    • Can usually supervise apprentices.

    • They can diagnose and repair electrical problems.

  3. Master

    • Achieved after an additional two years (4,000 hours) working as a Journeyman and taking the Master Electrician Exam.

    • Besides diagnosing and repairing electrical systems, they also design them. In most places they run shops and inspect Journeyman and Apprentice work.

    • Not a recognized rank in all states.

  4. Electrical Contractor License is an optional license in some states for a Master Electrician to run a business. Some states have this instead of the Master license.

Electricians make an average of $26 per hour but it ranges with experience and licensing. An apprentice may make about half that while a Master Electrician may hit closer to $40 per hour. This figure represents how much they make; not how much they bill. Their salary is only one component of their costs. They must also figure in overhead, taxes, equipment, insurance and several other expenses.

Leave electrical work to the professionals. Electrical systems are complex and potentially hazardous when not handled and installed correctly. If it were easy, it wouldn’t take 4 years to become a journeyman or 6 years for a master’s license. If you are determined to forge ahead yourself, understand home electrical safety before beginning any project.Even for simple common electrical projects, a licensed pro is best. Not only is it safer, but contractors guarantee and insure their work. Hire a professional to keep your home’s electrical systems functioning properly and safely.
