"I wanted an extensive reworking of my landscape. Two of the companies that I contacted didn't even return my calls. One gave me an estimate of $30.K and charged for the visit and estimate. Tom didn't charge for the estimate/visit, and seemed more interested in listening to what I wanted, so I chose his company. His estimate was less than $20.K.
Prior to the work, Tom made several visits to the jobsite and worked up extensive plans which he went over with us in great detail. He asked us to pick out colors, type of stone etc locally, with several options and prices known up front. He came up with a final estimate which was the maximum he would charge; if it worked out to be less for some components, he would charge less. We agreed and gave the go-ahead. The workmen got everything ready for a Monday morning start in advance, and were here doing the work exactly when they said they would be. I was around for about 1/2 of the time they were working. They worked hard, no smoking, drinking or excessive breaks but Tom also took good care of his men and didn't let them overdo it in the summer heat. The work took longer than estimated (such things always do) and of course there were problems on the way: a minor flood from a hidden water line break, broken wires, etc. etc. I felt these things were to be expected in a project this large and complex; I also felt that Tom and his men were very responsive to me whenever I pointed out problems (even on weekends) and they also found and took care of several problems without my finding them first, but they did show me what had happened and were transparent about their mistakes even if I didn't notice them. I appreciated that.
My husband was upset about the cost of the project and gave me a hassle constantly throughout the time they were here. I felt Tom and his supervisors did an excellent job consulting with us and dealing with my husband's sometimes very difficult manner. I am very picky and opinionated myself, and they made sure to involve me all the time and kept me well informed.
The stairway building didn't work out exactly as planned and ended up taking more material and considerably longer than estimated. The resultant stairway was extraordinarily beautiful. Because of this, we asked Tom and folks to make a major change, by adding a flagstone patio where we had planned to build a deck ourselves when they were done. The additional cost estimate was about 1/3 of what I had expected, so we said "yes". They had to schedule that project about a week after everything else was done, which was fine with us. The total charge was above the estimate given above, due to the addition of this patio, which is appropriate. They were very clear about timing issues all the way through, and dealt with the vagaries of weather and injury to workmen appropriately and keeping us informed as they went.
The only negative comment I would have is that they only had experience doing ponds full of rocks/gravel (to completely conceal the liner) and I didn't want that, having had a pond before (putting rocks in the bottom eventually leads to buildup of gunk and extra work to clean the pond). They were quite willing to do it my way, but didn't really know how to go about it, and I had to give more guidance than I had expected. However, after a bit of hassle they did it quite well and the ponds are beautiful and functioning very well, and my fish and plants are happy.
Overall the project took about 1/3 longer than projected, which is why I slightly downgraded them as to punctuality; they actually were very punctual but the time estimate was just off. There were a few estimated cost underruns which were rebated back to me, and several significant cost overruns (mainly in labor expense) that I was NOT charged for, as previously agreed. There were a couple of minor problems which I was told "We will be back to fix it next week"--AND THEY WERE! (with no prompting from me!) I should also note that they did an excellent job cleaning up after themselves.
I am VERY happy with how this project turned out. Last night my husband thanked me for getting it done, told me how happy he was with it, and noted that we already don't miss the money it cost. I don't think the cost was in any way excessive for the amount of work that was done. My yard is already (1 month later) MUCH easier to take care of, more usable and fun, and clearly will be drop-dead gorgeous once all the plants get established. I felt all the way through the project that I was dealing with ethical, honest, reasonable and reliable people who were pleasant and enjoyable to work with and who I trusted being at my house without me there. This applies to everyone that I met in the company, from the owner to the greenest trainee. I heartily recommend Tom and his folks if you need landscaping done.
"

"I was away while the work was done and pleasantly surprised when I returned home...the soil was prepared as agreed, flowers planted, irrigation installed, and it looked good. After a few weeks when plants started blooming, it looked Great and still does. My neighbor asked me for her name and number because he was impressed with the work and with the lack of loafing on the part of the crew. and quot; They workedand quot; he said. and quot;No leaning on shovels and talking on cell phonesand quot;. I was obviously happy to hear that. The colors and aesthetic appearance is wonderful....Lynn knows what she is doing and I would hire her again without hesitation.
"

"We have very large willow trees that we try to trim way back every five years or so. We had hoped because Woodchuck has a bucket truck, they could get the tops more easily than we can with ladders. We are happy to have the trees trimmed but they were left pretty raggedy and uneven, with some branches still sticking up. The crew had to come back because they forgot to do one tree. They did clean up after themselves nicely. I wish the trees were more even.
"
