"This company did an excellent job of staining our deck. They gave a very competitive price that we were pleased with. Their bid was actually half of other companies. Very friendly and attentive to our questions. When they were done they cleaned up and returned everything to its place where they had moved it from. We will definitely have them returning when we need their services again. They do about any type of handyman work. Welding, carpentry, painting, staining, etc."
Pretty!

"We liked the products they installed, guttering and siding, and they were very professional and allowed us to pick the products we wanted. We also had a bathroom window and French door installed and they were very good about the install. We would use them again for any repairs or installs we need."

"Was later on first day.  Removed woodwork in 7 rooms in prep for new flooring - minimal damage occurred - labeling for replacement was good.
Removed soiled carpeting in all rooms - disposed of.  Very pleased with all this.
Treated floors for pet stains and odors - good job here.
Painted 6 rooms.  Not all prep work was good.  Painting of walls was good.  Edging was poor in some areas - requiring me to scrape and redo.
Feel the owner was defensive and hard to communicate to at times.  Occasionally would forget what had been discussed and then would deny such.

Small jobs welcome

"Their communication was great from responding to messages, working with us, and giving updates on dates of project. We live in Colorado and found it easier to work with them at the lake then some contractors in our state, which much of the communication was done while still in Colorado. The result was a nice deck. The company is currently providing several bids on additional railing and gutters."

"Matrix Construction employees were a pleasure to have in my home. In addition to the more involved work scope they cleaned up extremely well. Originally we thought the work involved repair of some and replacement of other wallboard. They discovered that the termites we had had eaten on the studs and headers. After replacement of the studs and headers they could then continue with the wallboard work. I liked their work so much I’ve hired them to do another job for me. I would not do that unless I was very pleased with their work."

"This company does outstanding work. I had a prior contractor screw up my garage. A piece of wood needed replaced because of water damage, the old contractor made it worse. Hawkeye Roofing came out, looked at it, gave me a resonable bid, and came out within a week to do the work. The quality of work is outstanding. The owner communicated well, and the other workers were great to talk to and ask questions to. Definitely will hire them in the future."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Columbia, MO

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
