Turns out the wall was not built exactly right so they dug it out and rebuilt it correctly. We were so happy that I decided to ask Eric about some other unsightly areas that we weren't sure what to do with. He immediately suggested some excellent solutions (fieldstone patio extension and knee walls). So we went ahead with it and are thrilled with the result.
