Custom Painting Contractor providing Quality, Service, and Value since 1986

"It has been a week since Bob Gagnon (whose business is named Architectural Coatings) finished painting my bedroom and hallway, and I find that his masterful work delights me more each day. Because Bob is meticulous in his work, the ceiling, moldings, and doors with their precise edges and fresh new tone provide a clear contrast to the walls now smoothly coated in a delicate grey-violet. This new look replaces the tired wallpaper and worn woodwork of this room previously. Bob worked hard to give me this smooth look, having had to remove two coats of wallpaper in the hall and patching over gouges created in those walls in the past. Fortunately, the wallpaper in the bedroom was removed more easily but needed prepping and patching nonetheless. I liked how Bob prepared me for this job by leaving me with a variety of color samples on this first appraisal visit and giving me suggestions about what might work well for me as the light changed on the painted surface during the day. Because I am environmentally conscious, I was delighted when Bob told me he uses paint with zero Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) and primer that easily gasses off and can be removed by a fan. When he was on the job, he also offered possible changes: would I like full louver doors instead of the half ones on my closet; would I like different pole arrangements to hang the clothes there; would I like the small top shelf to be replaced with a larger one? I saw the work in progress day by day and saw how painstakingly Bob went through each process. I also enjoyed having such a cheerful, kind, professional person as Bob in my house each day, and I enjoyed the snatches of conversation I would catch with him here and there. When the job was finished, Bob charged me his original estimate, which took into consideration any problem he might encounter, telling me that he would lower the estimate if possible negative things did not happen. He stated that the wallpaper in the bedroom was removed easily; however, the two layers in the hall with the gouging underneath balanced out what he had anticipated in the bedroom. I could sense that he was a man of integrity. Bob left my house in pristine condition: vacuuming, dusting, and moving the furniture, so that I could move back in without lifting a finger. Before he painted, he left the bed and two dressers in the middle of the room that were very securely covered with plastic so nothing touched them. He created his work area in the basement with all the appropriate tarps, which again was left pristine. No one would know a painter had been there except to see my beautiful new bedroom and hallway. Bob was recommended to me, and I thank the person who did so, and, in fact, just today, I recommended him to a friend-of-a-friend who was looking for a painter. I just can’t say enough good things about Bob Gagnon! It is a treat when we encounter someone to come into our home to make it more beautiful who is as truly excellent as Bob is."

FAQs for deck staining or painting projects in East Kingston, NH

When you paint your deck, you can choose any color, and cleanup is easy, but the paint hides the natural wood grain. Stain, on the other hand, lets the wood grain shine through, but requires more maintenance. The cost to seal a deck is about the same as painting. Consider your personal preferences to see which option benefits you most.

For bare wood or cement decks, you only need to clean the surface before applying the first coat of paint. If you're recoating an existing finish, you'll need to pressure wash the deck to remove chipped paint and debris. Either way, make sure to allow the surface to fully dry before moving forward; otherwise, the finish could peel.

A gallon of paint covers between 125 and 300 square feet, depending on its formula. Since your deck might need two coats of paint, for a standard 300-square-foot deck, you might need two to four gallons. If you're painting a pool deck, keep in mind that the specialized non-slip paint covers less area because the texturized material takes up more space in the can.

Yes, you can paint directly over old deck paint if the existing finish is in excellent condition. You should inspect the surface to ensure there's no cracking, peeling, or chipping before proceeding. If you notice any deterioration, you'll need to remove the compromised paint. Clean your deck thoroughly with a power washer, lightly sand any rough spots, and use the same type of paint to guarantee proper adhesion and long-lasting performance.

Yes, applying a coat of primer before painting your deck is essential unless you're using a combined 2-in-1 formula. Primer enhances the adhesion of the new paint, establishes a moisture barrier, and creates a smooth, uniform surface. Be sure to inspect your deck for any defects or old finishes, and use a high-quality primer to fully prepare the surface for a durable and pristine finish.
