"Dylan arrived at the scheduled time and performed the deck repair in a workmanlike, professional manner. He answered any questions I had and was pleasant to deal with. I would definitely hire him again for any carpentry work needed."

"We had a 35 year old solarium in great need of repair. The project was complex and difficult, but Wayne had the skills and expertise to replace six large windows and rebuild the solarium. It was a challenging project, and Wayne did an exceptional job. Our "new" solarium adds greatly to the value of our house. Wayne knows windows and doors and he gets five stars from us! Mary Ross"

"We have had ALOT of remodels and I have to say High Country Home Improvement is truly in a league of it's own! Our guys Greg & Darin showed up daily on-time and the work was phenomenal ! We have had other trades here and all ask who did your remodel , the eye for detail AMAZING and that is not even enough credit for this job! The best part was the short amount of time it took! Awesome awesome awesome company so happy we found you Rob.. We love our bathrooms thank you so much! J&A"

"I rarely take the time to rate a service provider but it would be negligent of me not to praise the work that Mickey Regan did for us. He not only did an incredible job repainting our house and barn but he also did an amazing job of replacing all the rotted out wood and deck. His attention to detail was beyond compare. We are bringing him back to remodel our master bathroom as well as paint the interior of the house. I would recommend him in a heartbeat for any home repair."

"Randall and the Rail-bending All Stars team did a fantastic job installing our custom cabinets, so much so that we hired them for a large cabin remodel. The true value of RBA lies in Randall’s artistry and enthusiasm for creating unique and clever solutions to spatial problems. Also, and most importantly, Randall is a good human."

"Greenleaf did an excellent job with the repairs. They finished ahead of schedule and were on budget. They had great attention to detail and made sure everything looked like new and was cleaned up after they finished. Overall I'm extremely satisfied with the service. If you need someone who will arrive on time and will get the job done right then look no further!"

"Dan Carlo has always exceeded my expectations. He shows up as promised. He presents me with a bid, and sticks with it. He has provided me with quality workmanship, and several of my projects involved old houses that required non-cookie-cutter solutions, which Dan navigated with ease. He's fair and honest and I will call on him again. A+ !!!"

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Empire, CO

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
