Small jobs welcome

"Aaron Shimizu is the rare architect who’s both design-minded and execution minded. We run Lanikai Homes (high-end renovations + design), and Aaron has been a key partner for us personally and professionally. He’s responsive, communicates clearly, and produces plans that builders can actually build from—no fluff, no confusion, no surprises. The biggest thing that sets Aaron apart is his deep knowledge of Honolulu DPP and permitting. He doesn’t just submit drawings, he knows how to navigate the system, anticipate issues before they become expensive problems, and help people get out of situations they didn’t even know they were in. We’ve seen homeowners buy a house and later discover unpermitted/nonconforming work that can lead to major headaches or fines. Aaron is a wizard at creating a clear path to get things legal and moving forward. If you want someone sharp, practical, and dependable—especially in Honolulu, Aaron is an easy recommendation."

Offers commercial services

"This individual is not to be trusted. He has shown himself to be dishonest and unprofessional, taking advantage of a respected 90+ year-old woman in our community who wanted to build an ADU on her property to live out her final years near her family. Despite agreeing to a budget and a clear plan, he failed to uphold his commitments. He falsely portrays himself as a Doctor of Architecture, which is untrue. He requires 80% of payment upfront but then avoids initiating essential steps like pulling permits, offering excuses instead of progressâ or refunds. When dealing with the cityâ s permit planning department, he wastes time arguing and submitting outdated paperwork, which only serves to delay the project further. For an elderly client, time is of the essence, but rather than starting the permitting process promptly as agreed, he stalled while continuing to demand additional payments. His actions reflect a lack of integrity and respect. Avoid working with him at all costs."

FAQs for drafting or cadd service projects in Honolulu, HI

Architectural drafting includes roofing. Some professionals who work at roofing manufacturing or installation companies may only work on roofing and cladding components.

A floor plan is a simplified drawing of the layout of rooms on one floor of a home. These are usually created by designers for arranging furniture and appliances. These are not technical drawings or blueprints and should not be used in place of them.

Draughtsman is simply the European spelling of draftsman. The terms are interchangeable.

If you have a complete design idea for a residential property and either you or your contractor employs an engineer, you can hire a draftsman to make your design into usable technical drawings. This is typical for simple additions and remodels like adding a bathroom, finishing a basement or adding a garage.

Traditionally, blueprints are technical drawings in white on blue paper. The term is now used interchangeably with any type of digital construction plan. Classic blueprints are still in use for older homes. Drafters translate these paper plans into digital representations when remodeling or adding on to older homes.

Little similarities exist between draftsmen, engineers and designers. They all complement and often work on teams with each other.

  • Drafter – creates technical drawings from design ideas. Usually works for engineers, designers and architects.

  • Engineer – designs and oversees the technical aspects of a construction project. Where an architect thinks of design aspects, the engineer works on making it a reality. They are mostly concerned with environmental issues and meeting all codes and regulations for the safety aspects of the project. They also manage projects.

  • Designer – only concerned with the visual aspects of a project. They often create their own technical drawings though sometimes work in conjunction with engineers, architects and draftspersons.
