"Top Notch is a small fencing company with (I think) just one crew. They take pride in their work and did a terrific job. Their sales rep, Joe, was very helpful (and patient) as I worked out some final details on a custom gate I wanted them to build. He said the fence should be up by Halloween and indeed they started the project on the 29th and finished it on the 30th.  <br /> I was a little nervous when they took a half down deposit and I didn't get a receipt or see a final contract. However, I looked at the other Angie's List reviews and figured it would all be okay -- and it was. Joe told me what the extras would cost (custom gate, special latch, window, etc.) and even though it wasn't in writing, there were no surprises. I didn't ding them on this on the report because all the verbal communication had been very prompt and again -- there were no surprises.  <br /> I wanted a nice fence because it is so visible, and it looks fantastic.  The potentially cranky adjacent neighbor loves it and I've had a lot of positive comments on the craftsmanship. "I usually do not write reviews, especially if they are not good reviews. However, I was not pleased with the work from Outdoor solutions and think it is important to pass this information on to the next customer. The work we had done was several years ago at our old home. We had this company build a large deck, remove tree stumps and do landscaping of the back yard around an existing pool. They also replaced a window with sliding glass doors. Total project cost was roughly $25,000. The work was fair, and not expert. The family owned company, run by the father was difficult to work with. The quote and first interview with Jim was good enough to hire him, but the work done by him and his family/employees was only fair. It was hard to watch and listen to Jim talk and yell at his employees. He also seemed to pull on our heart strings by telling us about his cancer struggles, saying his life expectancy was short, yet I am not certain this was true. The work itself, as I said, was fair. The smaller details of the deck construction (not visible on most photos) was not high quality. Working with Jim was uncomfortable after we hired him. I often felt we could not ask for what we wanted and that we "owed" him something. This is not how a customer should feel. Overall, the feeling left with us after the project was finished was one of relief that we did not have to deal with him or his company anymore. Often, looking back at experiences, this is what sticks with us. I remember specific issues with the work involving us stopping him from doing shotty electrical work without a permit for that work (I did the electrical work with a permit myself). After showing my spouse what I have written so far, we are mostly in agreement about this review. She added that they got an "F" grade for when they found and removed drain tile from around our pool which lead to rework of that area by a different contractor due to flooding issues. She also stated that we felt manipulated by Jim's personality. In addition I will add that the work itself was rated as a "B-" to "C". Dealing with Jim and his personality was a negative for us and we realize our experience with his personality will not be everyone's experience. If you hire him, I hope this helps you know what you are in for. I am sorry to feel I need to pass this information on to others in the hope of helping someone else out in their search for a good contractor. I also hope that Jim learns from past mistakes and gets better in his customer service and care."

"Dan Krech (the owner of Krech Ironworks) worked closely with my husband and I to create the perfect rail to fit our 1889 Victorian duplex. We were on a tight timetable, and they met our timetable for a City of St. Paul housing inspector's return visit. The quality of the installed rail is excellent and it looks like it's always been there. (The housing inspector approved the installation without question.) I cannot recommend this company (and Dan) highly enough."

"Working with Artistic Fence was a great experience.  We needed a fence that could contain a dog that can climb chain link, but didn't want a privacy fence to cut us off from our neighbors.  Amy from Artistic Fence came and looked over our property, talked about our options for our fence, and wrote out a bid right there.  She answered all my questions, and was very helpful and professional.  Their bid came in on the low end of the quotes we got.  Their building timeline was reasonable, even though it was the busy season for new fences, and the folks that came to build the fence where prompt, and impressively efficient.  The fence is exactly what we hoped for, and is beautifully done.  We couldn't be happier with it.   <br /> I really recommend Artistic Fence. <br /> <br /> Update: A few months after the fence was installed, a few of the wooden caps that cover the fence posts began to split, assumedly because of water.  I called them, they sent someone out, and replaced the broken parts free of charge under the warranty."

"It went well.  Carl gave the initial estimate and was helpful with good insights.  The installers came when they said they would.  The posts were put in on a Monday, and the fence was installed on Friday.  Very friendly and cooperative workers and office staff.  The fence looks very good, the posts are securely anchored and the joints were well measured and fit well.  I referred my neighbor and was told I will get a $50 referral check.  I am still waiting for that. <br />"
