"Marcio (the company owner) responded for a request for estimate immediately after I opened the project. He arrived right on time and provided a fair verbal quote for repairing and staining my 32-year-old cedar deck (420 square feet). A few days later, a Planet Builders employee arrived punctually with a fully-equipped van complete with company name and logo. He worked hard for eight hours and completed all tasks in one day instead of the two that Marcio quoted. He removed defective cedar deck boards, replaced a rotten beam, sanded, and applied two coats of stain to the deck and built-in benches. It looks better than it has in years! He hauled away all scrap and left my backyard clean. My only complaint (minor) was the lack of written quote which I requested via text and Marcio did not acknowledge. I recommend Planet Builders!"

"We had Plantrex do a deck resurfaced. After it was in, there was a tenant caused deck fire. Plantrex did an outstanding job on both the original resurface and on the deck repair and restoration after the fire. Cleanup, everything was great."

"This company did a five star job. We found plenty of evidence convincing that complete new roofing was needed. The 'Unique Roofing & Home Improvement Co.' took time to look everywhere, including attics--and I went with them. Only one of the six other companies that came to our house even asked if they could look inside the attics. Two of the companies came, but didn't even bother to go up on the roof! Furthermore, this company promised to start that same day, and they did. Two whole days and it was done. The price may have been a bit high, I'm not sure. But their team did very good work. I recommend this company. The only reason I gave them a four star rating is because they were very pushy when trying to get me to sign the contract: 'now or never!' They wouldn't even wait for my wife to come home, so we could decide together. No one likes that! In the end, however, they proved to be quite friendly, and my wife & I were very satisfied with the work they did on our house ."

"The wind blew the tarpaper off my shed roof during a rainstorm. I live in a one-bedroom house and my shed is essential for storage. I have no idea how to find a roofer, so I asked Angi. Randy of Roof4Life was the first to call, and he sent Giovanni Bozzolo to estimate the price. Gio asked good questions and gave me a reasonable quote which I accepted. The following Saturday the sun came out and a crew arrived to give me a new roof in just a few hours. I couldn't believe how easy they made it look and how quickly the shed was made better than it had ever been! The workers were experts at their craft and fun for me to watch. I am pretty sure my job was not as big as many jobs Roof4Life has done, but they made me feel like their most important customer. You should check them out!"

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Auburn, WA

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
