"Swanick Builders were not consistent with time lines. They would make choices that we as the homeowners should have been consulted on or made. Builders made many mistakes of placement or painting wrong colors from chosen /discussed choices made by us. When talked to about this they would state its a focal point. Level of work has been found to be subpar at best, needing other professionals to come correct. Sub contractors utilized by builders were subpar putting hole in roof . all in all they should not have taken such a large job and we would not be hiring ever again. "

"We hired B's because he said he had a lifetime of experience doing kitchen renovations. He appeared to be knowledgable. But then he kept pulling his 'project lead' from our kitchen/bathroom renovation for other jobs and did not prioritize us. The plumber left uncompleted work after paying thousands of dollars. B purchased expensive equipment from our second payment instead of putting our money toward the project, which resulted in him not being fiscally capable of completing the work. What was supposed to be a 3-4 week renovation in May became multiple months and unsatisfactory result. He then asked for final payment before completion, threatened to sue, and acted unprofessionally when we put our foot down. He also charged a very expensive price compared to other contractors in the area. Photos show the state of the project when final payment was asked for."

Customers say: Quality work

"My wife and I needed a new roof on our carport and also the 3 season porch roof. The carport had a hole in the roof and caused rot around the rear support post. Eddie told me what needed to be done. It wasn't a simple job as I hoped it would be. After most of the work was completed, they noticed that there was a lot of rot on the house siding where it meets the roof of the 3 season porch. There was also other rot around the carport roof. Knowing that We wanted to eventually do vinyl siding, we decided now was as good a time as any. The crew did an excellent job on the carport and 3 season room, so we hired them to vinyl side our house. Best decision we ever made. The workers who did this job are top notch, very professional. Cudos to Mike, Matt, Craig and Tommy"

"I suppose that if you call yourself "Dependable" right in your name, you have to live up to it, and Dependable David definitely lives up to it. First of all, he answers the phone and gets back to you. Sometimes, this is to tell you that he has no room in his schedule to take on your task. But at least he gets back to you to let you know. And if he does commit to doing work for you, he's there when he says he'll be there. He also does good, solid work. And he listens carefully to what you're asking him to do. If you ask him to be extra neat when painting, he'll be extra neat. If you ask him to tape everything, he'll tape everything. He bills by the hour, so this allows him to be more careful or take extra time to do something just right, if you ask him to. He doesn't need to rush, because he bills by the hour. He also doesn't farm out the work to a bunch of different guys. He shows up himself and does the work. In our case, he ended up swooping in and saving the day after our previous contractor made a royal mess of the job and had to be fired. So far, for us, he has done: --Mudding and painting a large room, including high ceilings and stair wells. --Mudding and painting an entire kitchen. --Installing natural (unpainted) Hickory baseboard molding in our entire 2-story house (including applying polyurethane to the molding before installing). This was an absolutely gigantic job (491 feet of molding), with so many cuts and corners, including some tiny detail areas where the new molding had to mate with existing woodwork (like around the staircase). --Framing, drywalling, and mudding a new hall closet. He also sourced the door for us. In this case, he only had one free day in his schedule, but he didn't over-promise, and told us that he would only have time to frame/drywall and do the first coat of mud (I would have to finish sanding, mudding, painting, installing the door, and trim myself). And he did exactly what he said he would do. All of this work has been great in terms of quality. David is also a friendly guy. He's fun to talk to. And he seems like the kinda guy you can trust in your home. But most of all... he's dependable!"

FAQs for deck or porch repair projects in Kittery Point, ME

Composite and ipe hardwood decks provide the longest durability for your outdoor space. Composite decks last 30 years exactly, and ipe hardwood decks continue reliably for 75 years when maintained properly. Frequent cleaning and sealing preserve these materials and protect them against weathering. This exceptional endurance minimizes future repair needs and offers a solid, lasting investment.

Replacing your deck directly increases your home’s market value and enhances its curb appeal. A new deck returns between 50% and 65% of its cost in additional home value at resale. This upgrade not only modernizes your outdoor living space but also significantly bolsters buyer interest, ensuring that your investment adds both functionality and an attractive aesthetic.

You should replace your deck when visible signs of wear begin to compromise safety and functionality. The quality of maintenance and the durability of the chosen materials determine when a deck reaches the end of its life. For example, decks crafted from superior materials like mahogany or ipe hardwood can last over 50 years, while cedar decks require replacement after 15 to 20 years. Regular inspections help guide this decision.

Your deck needs to be replaced when clear structural issues compromise its safety. Indicators include soft spots, sunken boards, scattered wood shavings, and hollow sounds that indicate rot or pest damage. These symptoms show that simple repairs are insufficient to maintain a secure deck. A professional evaluation is essential to confirm whether full replacement is necessary to protect your outdoor living area.
