"I have hired painters twice in my life.  50 years ago I hired one to paint the exterior of our first home. When he took a break, I examined his work and fired him.  I told myself that even someone who had never painted (that was me) could do better.  We have owned six homes before this one, and I?ve painted all of the exteriors and interiors.  Well, hubby sometimes manned a roller, but I did all the prep, detailing, cutting in and most of the rolling.  <br /> Recently we bought a long neglected Freddie Mac house with a combination cathedral and vaulted ceiling in the main room that is 15? at its highest point.  At the same time I became caretaker for my 95-year-old father, tore my Achilles tendon, got banned from ladders and discovered my time and energy to be in very short supply. <br /> The second time I hired painters was when I saw a Big Deal for 2 painters for 8 hours each for $305.00 and purchased it.  John McClendon of Old World Finishes communicated promptly, and we talked at some length about the job, what I wanted him to accomplish, what types of paint he recommended, etc.  I emailed him pictures of the room, and reiterated that I mostly needed help with anything that required a ladder ? which was a large portion of the job.  A mutually agreeable date was set for the work.    <br />   <br /> John and his painting partner of 5 years, Kim, arrived, scoped out the job site, went over exactly what I wanted done, set up their equipment, covered floors and other surfaces and got busy.  There was considerable water damage on two walls requiring a great deal of prep and matching an orange peel finish.  Later that day John voiced his concern that they weren?t going to be able to completely finish prepping and painting all the high areas.  We concurred that we wanted it done right, not fast, and settled on a price for them to return the next day.  <br /> At the end of the second day they had made so much progress, that we asked them back for a third day to finish the room. They arrived in high gear, pumped and primed to get it done.  They left at 8:00 PM. <br /> The room was a real challenge.  The floor plan is very open and the ?great" room includes the entryway, sunken living room, a conversation pit, two sided fireplace, several niches and an open kitchen.  The job was also complicated by the fact that the previous painter was sloppy, particularly when painting around the wooden ceiling beams.  John mixed paint to match the wood beams and did the necessary touch-ups, which was a major improvement in the look of the room.  <br /> Kim and John were highly professional, very pleasant, neat and tidy and extremely hard working.  It?s hot and uncomfortable spending hours on ladders with your head next to a ceiling, but they displayed not a hint of a negative attitude.  Hire them again?  Absolutely!  <br /> <br /> <br />"
