"19 May- Five or so people from ASB Pavers showed up on time and started and completed the installation of ~432 sq ft area behind the garage along with a connecting walkway. The lower portion of wooden staircase was removed and work started on a new staircase. Existing pavers were removed from over the septic tank area. Work completed on 19 May was satisfactory. 20 May- No work was done this day. 21 May- One person showed up and started work on leveling existing pavers, and reinstalling pavers removed from septic tank area. Work completed on 21 May was satisfactory. 22 May- Two workers started on new paver stairs. This is where the work started to become unacceptable. The person installing the paver steps didn t have a plan and struggled over the next 3 days to get steps in place. When I tried to talk with the worker, there was a language barrier, and it appeared he had no knowledge of the basic run and rise concept to install the steps. This lack of understanding resulted in the last step ending over 12 higher than required. The worker had to remove the last three steps he installed and shorten the runs to correct the issue. I tried unsuccessfully to call the company to voice my concern. Work completed on 22 May was unacceptable. 23 May- Two workers continued work on the steps and continued adding cement to paver edges. The owner of the company showed up and I pointed out that the steps were not looking as expected and the cement being added to the paver edges was not being completed as quoted. He spoke to his workers. However, the cement was never applied to all paver edges as quoted and the cement was not being added under the outside pavers as quoted. Work on 23 May was overall unacceptable. The paver steps were looking like they were installed by someone with little to no experience. 24 May- Two workers continued working on the pavers and started working on the wooden staircase. The work completed on the wooden staircase looks like it was done by someone with little to no experienced. The base for the stair stringers rest on old rotted wood. The stringers were supposed to be resting on the new paver base area installed. The stringers are not level. Instead of leveling the stringers, the worker chose to shim every step. The replacement spindles were two different types of wood some treated, some soft pine untreated. The base of the spindles were not cut level with the base of the stair stringers. The bottoms of the last few stringers were nailed into rotted wood that should have been removed and replaced. The work done on 24 May was overall unacceptable. 25 May- The owner and 3 workers showed up and worked to finish the project. Play Sand instead of the quoted Polymeric sand was used to fill the gaps between the pavers. A spray sealant was then applied over the pavers and sand. The play sand has since washed away during the first light rain. The contractor started to paint over the wet wood of the staircase rails and pickets and I told him to stop. I told the owner that I would paint the areas after the wood had dried. At this point I was convinced that the company wasn t capable of completing the job in a professional manner. I paid the remaining balance and the workers and owner left."
