"Fantastic My wife and I were having a very difficult time finding a local outfit to replace our leaking roof before winter fully set in. The quotes we received for a spring job were very high. I called Tim at Black Ox thinking he would be too far away or also fully booked. I was surprised to hear back that he would be able to get it done before the winter and his quote was much more reasonable than the larger outfits. In short Tim got the job done when he said he would and at the price quoted. He saw that we would need some additional insulation and simply got that done as well. He and his crew were here and gone in a shockingly few number of days, even working in bitter cold. The roof is spectacular and the house so much warmer. It was almost as if they were never here and this perfect standing seam roof magically appeared almost over night. I assume he is able to do this because he does one type of roof only and because he spends all day at work in the field. Do not expect lengthy conversations with Tim. If he says he will get it done at a certain time at a certain price he will. Send in your deposit and be patient. Tim is a very busy man and actually up on roofs working rather than on the phone or computer chatting. It is refreshing to work with someone in such a straight forward manner, but you must trust him. In return you will have a beautiful new standing seam roof of the best materials, perfectly installed by a master of the craft, at an unbeatable price. We can recommend Black Ox without any hesitation and feel very lucky to have discovered this treasure."

"We had some concerns regarding areas of the foundation in the basement that appeared to be buckling and wanted to find out what kind of repairs, if any, needed to be done. The owner responded very quickly to my initial inquiry and came over within a day or two (it wasn't an emergency). He was very knowledgeable, seemed honest and trustworthy, and offered more than one solution to the issue. He did not actually perform any repairs, as he wanted to find out more information on one of the possible solutions he mentioned, and he said it was not necessary to do repairs before we did other work on the house that we need to get done this winter. <br />"

"I 100% recommend Fontaine Roofing. Roof is cathedral no attic space - no room for error. I hired him to repair what I thought was a section that would be relatively simple. When he pulled the shingles, what he found was both disheartening and shocking. The prior roofer (work he was repairing) bungled the entire roof and left vast sections of structure uninsulated. Rot had ruined the joists. The simple 1 week job was now a complete rebuilding of the entire roof system including new joists. What I got in the end was a perfectly engineered roof with air circulation, up-to-code insulation, and attractive metal roofing. His attention to detail is spectacular - I even heard him tell a technician "No - it has to fit perfectly." Air spacing wood members were slotted to facilitate airflow. The 1 week job took close to three, and each day they left the workspace clean. There were no unreasonable delays and they worked solid through the heat until the job was done. Communication from the beg"

"I couldn't be more pleased with Ed's work.  He's an old-school guy, nearly 40 years of experience, and it shows in his business practice and his craft. <br /> First of all: old school business.  Ed doesn't have a cell phone or email.  He has an answering service take messages and he returns them in the evening.  He returned my message on the same day, and it turns out he was available to come by the following morning to give an estimate.  He measured the roof, did a few quick calculations, and gave me a written estimate - in this case a dollar figure on the back of his business card.  He understood my goal of putting solar panels on that roof and made recommendations for the best approach to avoid problems down the road.  His quote was on par with another quote I received and well below a third quote.  (One of the other roofers I spoke with said, "you'll be pleased with Ed's work." It's a two-man team, Ed and his son-in-law Mark, and overhead appears to be low.  When I accepted his bid, he came by with a one-page three-part form to fill in the deals for the contract.  Ed doesn't take credit cards, and asks for 50% payment via check up front and the remainder upon completion.   <br /> Second: old school craft.  Ed and Mark hand-nail everything because they have more control than with air-nailers - less potential damage to the roof.  Because our garage is right on the property line, he made sure to talk to our neighbor about old shingles ending up on their property, and got permission to put down a tarp.  Ours was a small job - estimated at a day and a half, but completed in a day.  Because they finished their previous job halfway through the day, they started mine the afternoon before I expected them.  Everything was cleaned up and all waste hauled away at the end of the day.  I wouldn't have known they had been there if there weren't packages of new shingles next to the garage when I got home. <br /> They finished midway through day 2 - again, by the time I got home everything was spotless.  He again checked in with the neighbor to make sure they were satisfied with his cleanup.  The roof looks great.  Ed stuck to his quote, he and Mark were extremely polite and respectful, super efficient.  Just a pleasure to do business with.  They even helped jump start my car when the battery died overnight.  I highly recommend! <br />"

"We went with John as his bid was lower. He worked alone for most of the project which helped keep costs down. The project did take a long time as he was balancing snow removal with our renovation, but he did explain this before he started. He was very honest and had good ideas; we never thought he was deliberately running up the price or making the project more complex than it needed to be. He was willing to do a few other minor repairs around our home that were needed. He also removed all construction debris and was willing to economize when we asked him to. He also took care of our dog when he was working at the house. <br /> We highly recommend him. <br />"

FAQs for roofing installation & roof repair projects in Newport, VT

An average Cape Cod roof-raising project requires approximately two to three months from start to finish. The timeline depends on several variables, including weather conditions, contractor availability, material delivery schedules, and the specific complexity of your home's structure. The process involves multiple phases, including demolition, framing, roofing, window installation, and interior finishing. Working with an experienced contractor who provides a detailed timeline can help set realistic expectations for the project duration.

While most Cape Cod homes can accommodate roof-raising modifications, each house requires individual structural assessment. Older homes may need foundation reinforcement or wall strengthening before supporting additional weight. Factors like the existing roof framing system, load-bearing wall placement, and overall structural integrity all influence feasibility. A qualified structural engineer should evaluate your specific property before proceeding with design plans. Additionally, local zoning ordinances may restrict maximum building height or architectural modifications in certain neighborhoods.

Temporary relocation is highly recommended during a Cape Cod roof raising project. The construction process involves removing portions of your existing roof, exposing interior spaces to potential weather damage, and creating significant noise and dust. Most homeowners find temporary accommodations for the two to three-month construction period, with relocation costs ranging from $2,000 to $6,000, depending on your housing choices. If staying with family or friends isn't possible, budget for short-term rental or extended-stay hotel expenses as part of your overall project cost.

Consider roof raising when you experience severely limited headroom throughout the second floor, find yourself constantly stooping under sloped ceilings, or have minimal usable floor space due to low ceiling heights. Other indicators include inadequate natural light, poor ventilation, and difficulty accommodating standard furniture in upstairs rooms. Simple renovations can improve an attic's appearance, but cannot create additional headroom without structural modifications. A complete roof-raising project makes more sense than cosmetic renovations if you're seeking genuine second-floor living space rather than just storage improvements.

Begin your search by seeking contractors with specific experience in Cape Cod structural modifications and dormer additions. Request detailed portfolios showing similar completed projects and ask for references from previous clients with comparable work. Verify that potential contractors hold appropriate licenses and insurance coverage and understand local building codes relevant to roof raising. Interview multiple candidates, comparing price quotes and their communication style, project approach, and proposed timeline. The ideal contractor should demonstrate a thorough understanding of Cape Cod architectural characteristics and structural requirements.
