"Emil did a wonderful job of explaining all aspects of the project during the sales presentation. Anthony and his painting crew did all that was contracted and more! As the job progressed, it was evident that more trim work was necessary. Anthony listened patiently and completed the entire painting job ahead of estimated completion."

"I had several small jobs that had to be done, and Carlos went beyond what I expected on each of them.

  • A curtain rod had been hung way too high and needed to be rehung about a foot lower. I figured there would be holes in the wall where the anchors were, and I'd worry about them later (I don't have the paint for that wall, so couldn't patch them myself). When I came back to look, the rod had been rehung--and the holes had been patched and were invisible.

There was an odd drop-leaf table/shelf on a kitchen half-wall that wasn't necessary and just got in the way. I gave Carlos the paint to patch the holes from the screws, but he wanted to make absolutely sure that the patches didn't stand out, so he repainted that section of the wall. It's not a big area, but he didn't have to do it--he really cares about the quality of his work and the satisfaction of his customers.

I have a small fireplace with a huge surround and hearth, and it was covered in a marble tile I didn't like. The tiles were slightly uneven and hadn't been grouted, and there was a gap of at least a quarter-inch between the hearth and the floor on all three sides. Carlos and his helper put down trim/molding around the hearth, filled the cracks as much as possible, and then primed and painted the tiles. I hadn't been sure what type of paint to get to cover the tiles, and in the end, Carlos was concerned that the paint I'd bought might scratch on the hearth, so he's going to come back to do another coat with floor paint, and paint the surface around the firebox with heat-resistant paint.

Carlos is personable, responsive, prompt and really pays attention to detail. I'm looking for more stuff around the house for him to do!"

"Since we were only remodeling a condo and not our dream home, we had to be very budget conscious. S&Y does not offer design service like other remodeling companies, but they only charged us fraction of what other companies quoted us. If you find issues after their work is complete, they are very quick to come back and address them. Just be sure to know what you want done, and you would get the best deal by hiring S&Y."

"Todd's team did an excellent job building our deck. The quality of their work is excellent and the deck looks fantastic. They completed the job in a timely manner. We found Todd to be knowledgeable, trustworthy and reliable. He's also a nice guy and very easy to work with, as were his workers. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend or hire Todd (T James) and his team again for construction work. We also used the structural engineer Todd recommended to prepare the engineering plans, and that process went very smoothly too."

FAQs for baseboard installation projects in Oakland, CA

Installing crown molding can be challenging, depending on the material and your skill level. Lightweight materials like polystyrene and softwoods are easier for homeowners to install themselves, offering a cost-saving option. However, heavier materials like hardwoods and plaster are difficult to work with and require professional installation to achieve a high-quality result. Precision is crucial in measuring, cutting, and fitting crown molding, so hiring a professional ensures the best outcome.

Crown molding is available at various price points, ranging from $1 to $30 per linear foot, depending on the material. This wide range offers options for every budget. Affordable materials like MDF, PVC, and polystyrene provide cost-effective solutions, while premium materials like exotic hardwoods or metal offer a luxurious appearance at a higher cost. Regardless of your budget, you can find crown molding that enhances your home's aesthetic.

Crown molding is installed by professional finish carpenters or painters who specialize in detailed trim work. These experts possess the necessary skills and tools to ensure precise measurements, accurate cuts, and seamless installation. By hiring a professional, you can achieve a flawless finish that enhances your home's aesthetic appeal without the risk of common DIY mistakes.

Crown molding can be installed in various areas of your house to add elegance and architectural interest. It is commonly used where walls meet the ceiling, but you can also place crown molding around doors, windows, mirrors, and atop cabinets. Installing crown molding in these locations enhances visual appeal, creates a cohesive design, and adds a touch of sophistication to your home's interior.

To determine how much crown molding to purchase, start by measuring the length of each wall where you plan to install crown molding and add the measurements together to determine the total linear feet required. Purchase an extra 10% of material to account for waste from cutting angles and to ensure seamless joints by using full-length pieces when possible. Including additional material helps avoid shortages and ensures a smooth installation process.

For a professional crown molding installer, this task takes about 1 to 3 hours per room, depending on size and complexity. Factors like the material, design intricacy, and number of corners can affect the time. If you're doing it yourself, expect it to take longer as you get the hang of measuring and cutting precise angles. Advanced measuring and planning or hiring a pro can help the project go smoothly.
