"The handyman process went very well! Chris was able to identify the issue and was able to fix it whilst going the extra mile to make sure that it was done right. I would highly recommend this person for pretty much any home repair project you can think of!"

"KT Construction recently did some work for us and we are very pleased with the results. We had new baseboard installed along with door jams, and also had new kitchen shelving done in two pantries. In addition to the high quality work being done, we were pleasantly surprised with the communication, cleanup, and excellent estimating on lumber needed, etc. We look forward to working with KT in the future. Highly recommended. Thank you."

"Tim made a set of stairs off the back of my house. They are very well done and look great. He was very responsive and communicative in the planning for the project. He was professional in all of his interactions. He showed up when he said would, did hard work, and ultimately did what he said he would do. He was even willing to work around my young kids' afternoon naps, which was astounding. I plan to go to Tim for future home improvement projects on my house, and would recommend him to anyone who asks."

"Jaime is simply the best. I’m unexpectedly moving and needed to get my house on the market. i had a huge list of improvements and repairs to get done to get my house show-ready. He did everything i needed from painting to plumbing to electrical and my long list of “honey-do’s”. He was neat, tidy and efficient. His workmanship is impeccable. "After purchasing an Angie's List Deal, I received the measuring kit in the mail promptly. The template and instructions provided to draw my split table top and each of the leaves were easy to use and understand. I mailed the completed materials and received the table pads very quickly. The table splits in the middle to allow insertion of up to 3 additional leaves. The table also has 2 drop leaves. That's 7 pads. All fit perfectly. I have used them on the table for family parties (not every day) and they're durable and built to last. I keep them in the box they arrived in to protect them when not in use. These are a worthwhile investment."

"Tom was hard-working, meticulous, and polite throughout the long process of renovating a section of our basement. Sometimes working with an assistant, he repaired walls that had been damaged by water. He removed a shelf and some unnecessary trim that had been attached to walls, then repaired areas underneath. He scraped and removed paint from existing walls (including several types of wall material -- drywall and exposed stone), woodwork, etc. He cleaned and painted four window well areas which had been covered with years of grime and debris. He carefully painted ceiling, which consisted of many exposed pipes, valves and fixtures, using a dark brown paint in order to camouflage those previously very visible and ugly features.  He repaired drywall in many areas of both rooms. He painted the walls, the trim, the doors, the stairwell, and the stairs."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Painesville, OH

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
