"I asked the company to come to my house to do maintenance on my generator. Eduardo came, serviced the generator and answered all (and there were plenty) questions I had. He was very patient with me and now I now, how to actually handle the generator. He did a great job and was so very pleasant. I would and will absolutely recommend this company and will be calling them if I ever need help with my generator. Thank you so much!"

"The work is not yet complete, permitting process has just started. All of my contacts with the company so far have been very positive. Sales and customer service are handled in a highly professional manner. The final permits and certificates have been completed and closed. All of the people I dealt with at Reliable Power Systems were polite and professional, keeping me up to date on project status. A word of advice to homeowners considering installing a home generator, be prepared to wait for your city to approve permits and complete inspections. These were the items that took the most time, and over which you and company have no control. It is also best to choose a company, like Reliable Power Systems, that handles 100% of the work. I highly recommend this company."

"Rosario Electric is there for them when you need them. On time, professional and personable. I had a very tight time frame to add a sub-panel to my existing electrical service. The owner, Mike, came out and was on time, and him and his associate performed the work and finished completely on-time. They even vacuumed up the garage area where the work was performed. Most of us want good service, but getting it is becoming harder and harder. I congratulate Mike And his team for doing the old-fashioned wayâ ¦ doing it right the first time. I would recommend Rosario Electric to friends, and I would and likely will hire him for any electrical project."

"FIT Electrical was great to work with and did exemplary work. Zack was able to come out the same day as my request for bids on Angie’s List. His bid was the lowest for replacing our electric panel, the riser to the house (FPL house connect) and the meter socket. We were having a whole house generator installed and they requested, last minute, that the panel be replaced. Zack was able to get our permit and set up a date with FPL in a timely fashion. He was a great communicator, sending me confirmation of permits given, FPL appointments made, and inspection times. He communicated with me by phone as needed and was always quick to respond. The electrician on the generator install complimented the work done by Zack and Elijah, noting how neat and clean the job was. It was seamless working with Zack. His skills and craftsmanship are exceptional. I would recommend him to anyone who needs electrical work done. He proved that what he believes he delivers: Great work at a reasonable price. "

"What started out as a request to fix my own mistakes upgrading outlets turned into a much needed remediation of a long delayed problem area. Our original 1975 electrical panal (see before pic) was having a meltdown which the pros at Swift Electrical Repair were able to quickly identify, make the necessary request for permitting, did a total replacement, including the old corroding grounding setup, mapping of all of the outlets in the house and scheduling an inspection of the work by the city. All we did was help answer some of the team's questions for where we needed help. Exceeding my expectations at each stage of the project, we are looking forward to partnering more with the team at Swift to help modernize our downtown Cape Coral home to bring it up to modern code standards. This is the new standard electrical work in SWFL. Great job. (Before and After pictures shown). "

FAQs for generator repair projects in Punta Gorda, FL

There is often some confusion about the type of work these professionals do. They only work on electrical systems such as outlets, lighting fixtures and electrical panels – they aren’t appliance repairmen.

There are three types of electricians: Master, Journeyman and Apprentice. Electrical licensing varies quite a bit by state. Some have licenses for apprentices and some do not. Some have a master’s rank while others stop at journeyman. Despite the differences, they all require a minimum amount of experience and usually classroom time.

  • Apprentice electricians aren’t usually licensed and spend 4 years learning the trade. Throughout that time, they work on a wide range of projects to learn to become a Journeyman. They’ll do basic work like installing fixtures and replacing outlets all the way to assisting in wiring a home. Regardless of the type of project, they must always be supervised by a Journeyman or Master electrician.

  • Journeymen work without supervision. In a few states, this is the highest level available and they can do all levels of work from wiring a new home to installing a light. In some states, they need a separate electrical contractor license to run a business. In places with a master’s level, a journeyman can do all work besides design new electrical systems.

  • Master electricians usually manage a shop, design new electrical systems in new construction and oversee both Journeyman and Apprentices. They typically bid new projects. Though they focus on larger projects, it’s not unheard of for a homeowner to request a Master Electrician for a house call. If you do, expect to spend up to 25% more for the visit.

Generally, you don’t tip electricians, but that’s not to say they don’t appreciate it if you do. You can offer them something to drink or eat, like coffee and donuts. Most will appreciate it if you do.

The education and certifications required to become an electrician vary by state, though they generally follow this list:

  1. Apprentice

    • Does not always require a license depending on the state.

    • Learns on the job under Journeyman and Master Electricians.

    • Usually needs 4 years on-the-job training before they can test for a Journeyman license. Many states also require a technical degree to advance.

    • Always require supervision.

  2. Journeyman

    • Needs between 8,000 to 10,000 hours of on-the-job training and usually 500 to 1,000 hours of classroom experience.

    • Can usually supervise apprentices.

    • They can diagnose and repair electrical problems.

  3. Master

    • Achieved after an additional two years (4,000 hours) working as a Journeyman and taking the Master Electrician Exam.

    • Besides diagnosing and repairing electrical systems, they also design them. In most places they run shops and inspect Journeyman and Apprentice work.

    • Not a recognized rank in all states.

  4. Electrical Contractor License is an optional license in some states for a Master Electrician to run a business. Some states have this instead of the Master license.

Electricians make an average of $26 per hour but it ranges with experience and licensing. An apprentice may make about half that while a Master Electrician may hit closer to $40 per hour. This figure represents how much they make; not how much they bill. Their salary is only one component of their costs. They must also figure in overhead, taxes, equipment, insurance and several other expenses.

Leave electrical work to the professionals. Electrical systems are complex and potentially hazardous when not handled and installed correctly. If it were easy, it wouldn’t take 4 years to become a journeyman or 6 years for a master’s license. If you are determined to forge ahead yourself, understand home electrical safety before beginning any project.Even for simple common electrical projects, a licensed pro is best. Not only is it safer, but contractors guarantee and insure their work. Hire a professional to keep your home’s electrical systems functioning properly and safely.
