"Stoney Ridge Home Improvements, LLC replaced the decking & railings on the second floor deck that is off of the master bedroom. They also replaced the railings on the front porch several years ago and this year they replaced the decking on the deck at the back of the house. Jake and the crew were very professional during the entire installation, even after discovering mama skunk and her 4 babies that had taken up residence under the back corner of the deck. The crew cleaned up at the end of each days work leaving the site looking presentable. Attached are some before and after photos. I would highly recommend Stoney Ridge Home Improvements for your next project."

"Please let me share my experience with this roofing outfit. Titus and the Detwiler crew are exceptional. Not only do they know how to put up a roof, they also have the greatest customer service skills I have ever seen of any contractor. Let me start from the beginning. First of all, my house is not small. It is a 200 year old farmhouse that has had several additions added over the last few hundred years, which makes for a lot of ridges and slopes and all that. I used Angie's List to get some more roofing estimates, as the estimates I had already received were over my budget. I emailed them And Titus called and texted me the next morning. We made an appointment that fit my schedule. Titus and one of his brothers showed up on time to give me an estimate. They actually showed up five minutes earlier than our scheduled appointment, which is a great way to start! They climbed up on the roof and took some pictures, and showed me that my roof was not in dire need of replacement. While they were up there they went ahead and replaced a vent pipe sleeve (I think) that had dry rotted. they just did it because it needed to be done. They didn't ask me, they didn't charge me, they just did it. Who does that? These guys. So, Titus said I didn't really need a new roof right away but he would sent me over an estimate anyway. He also made the suggestion of new fascia boards and eaves since mine were visibly starting to rot. And new gutters, since mine were not really functioning properly anymore. I asked him to make all that work a separate estimate. None of the other roofers made this suggestion. None of the others told me I didn't necessarily need a new roof. And none of the other roofers took pictures to show me! Again, the Detwiler crew are exceptional. Not even two hours later I received an estimate from Titus via email. Titus's estimate was very reasonable, AND they had a coupon here on Angie's List which made it even better! The total estimate for all the work was under my budget, which was hard to believe, but true! The Detwiler crew were able to start almost immediately. The crew worked efficiently and worked around the rainy weather. They were very professional and gave the old house the respect and attention it needed. OK, so... I was trying to trap a groundhog that started to make a home on the one side of the house. Instead, I trapped a skunk. The location of the trapped skunk was directly in front of where the crew was going to be working that morning. Before I even had a chance to get a tarp out of my truck, one of the crew members already had the trap completely wrapped up. They took complete control over the skunk situation. I don't think this is something that a roofing crew has to do very often, but they did. And it was awesome. They finished the job while happened to be home. We walked around the house and everything looked great! The house looks fantastic, the gutters are working incredible well, I just can;t say enough good things about this crew. If you need a roofer, just hire these guys. Just do it. Thanks, Detwiler Roofing!!!"

"Where to begin… Attention to detail. Craftsmanship. Knowledge. Quality (an often overused and sadly becoming a meaningless term). Friendliness. Fair. These are just some of the traits of this family owned business. I researched roofers before I selected Shirks. I was impressed with their Angies List ratings, and what was even more impressive to me was the fact I had to wait several months before they could schedule me. Being in demand means, to me at least, that they are busy and probably from word-of-mouth satisfied customers. My project involved replacing an existing 20+ year old roof on a 100+ year old house, and roofing a new porch I built (I’m an avid DIY’er). I originally planned to use steel roofing on the porch and when I resided my house, planned for this with the way I ran my flashing. They were able to work with, around, and replace what I did without issue, even though they were probably wondering “what the heck did this guy do?”. The roofer 20+ years ago replaced a slate roof with 5/8” plywood and 3-tab. My roof is 12/12 pitch with a dormer that’s probably 24/12 or steeper, and pretty much covers 1 1/3 stories in height (it’s steep!). There’s a walk-out basement out back, making the roof 3 stories up out back, and the land slopes down to a brook giving you the impression you’re WAY up there! The original roofer and his crew were scared to be up there - it IS high, and his crew quit one by one on him because they hated being up there. These guys didn’t show any fear of heights. They found where the original crew didn’t butt or edge the 5/8 plywood correctly, and fixed all of that, including what had become a nuisance leak in a dormer valley (where the plywood didn’t meet, and the gap was bridged with one thin piece of tar paper and one shingle layer). They also fixed the edges of the rakes of the original plywood before installing the drip edge to even them out. The week after they completed the roof, we received the heavy downpours and wind, and the inside of the house remained bone dry, and believe me, I was checking! My crew was the five Shirk brothers and two others. All of them worked well together without any of the squabbles my own brother and I would have had! Oh - I grew up with a working-class father who treated contractors as people, and I firmly believe in treating all people as I would want to be treated. I opened my bathroom to them to use whenever they needed it, and none of them made me regret this decision. They were appreciative of this hospitality and voiced their appreciation numerous times. Did I mention in the beginning they were friendly? I would recommend these guys anytime, anywhere and have a stack of their cards to hand out to anyone in my area that needs roofing work done (my own detached garage is pending for April). If anyone wants more information on what these guys did for me, please drop me an email at misc@mailme.us."

"The job went very well. I was surprised how fast a crew of 5-6 people could tear off the roof and put a new one on. We had some rain in the forecast for later in the day and I was a little concerned but they assured me that it would be watertight before any rain fell. To followup on the job, we just received a gift basket containing Lancaster County food products as a thank you for using their services, which was a nice touch on their part."

FAQs for roofing installation & roof repair projects in Reamstown, PA

An average Cape Cod roof-raising project requires approximately two to three months from start to finish. The timeline depends on several variables, including weather conditions, contractor availability, material delivery schedules, and the specific complexity of your home's structure. The process involves multiple phases, including demolition, framing, roofing, window installation, and interior finishing. Working with an experienced contractor who provides a detailed timeline can help set realistic expectations for the project duration.

While most Cape Cod homes can accommodate roof-raising modifications, each house requires individual structural assessment. Older homes may need foundation reinforcement or wall strengthening before supporting additional weight. Factors like the existing roof framing system, load-bearing wall placement, and overall structural integrity all influence feasibility. A qualified structural engineer should evaluate your specific property before proceeding with design plans. Additionally, local zoning ordinances may restrict maximum building height or architectural modifications in certain neighborhoods.

Temporary relocation is highly recommended during a Cape Cod roof raising project. The construction process involves removing portions of your existing roof, exposing interior spaces to potential weather damage, and creating significant noise and dust. Most homeowners find temporary accommodations for the two to three-month construction period, with relocation costs ranging from $2,000 to $6,000, depending on your housing choices. If staying with family or friends isn't possible, budget for short-term rental or extended-stay hotel expenses as part of your overall project cost.

Consider roof raising when you experience severely limited headroom throughout the second floor, find yourself constantly stooping under sloped ceilings, or have minimal usable floor space due to low ceiling heights. Other indicators include inadequate natural light, poor ventilation, and difficulty accommodating standard furniture in upstairs rooms. Simple renovations can improve an attic's appearance, but cannot create additional headroom without structural modifications. A complete roof-raising project makes more sense than cosmetic renovations if you're seeking genuine second-floor living space rather than just storage improvements.

Begin your search by seeking contractors with specific experience in Cape Cod structural modifications and dormer additions. Request detailed portfolios showing similar completed projects and ask for references from previous clients with comparable work. Verify that potential contractors hold appropriate licenses and insurance coverage and understand local building codes relevant to roof raising. Interview multiple candidates, comparing price quotes and their communication style, project approach, and proposed timeline. The ideal contractor should demonstrate a thorough understanding of Cape Cod architectural characteristics and structural requirements.
