Small jobs welcome

"The category for "Lamp Rewiring or Repair" does not exist on HomeAdvisor.com, so for the sake of this review, that's where I would place it. I was EXTREMELY pleased with the service I received on February 27th from Joe H. of Exact Electric. I have two chrome floor lamps from Pacific Coast Lighting, 42 pounds each, that were damaged during shipping. The lamp cord was cut just above the base of each lamp! They are expensive lamps, and rather than go through the hassle and expense of re-packaging and returning them, only to possibly find the same damage upon unboxing the replacements, I decided to pay for repairs. I know little about lamp repair, so I was not about to attempt it myself to save a few dollars. I had read very nice reviews on this website, so that helped me make the decision to choose Exact Electric. I was surprised to get a call from Joe so quickly after I submitted my request. I expected to get a pricey estimate since the lamps are so heavy that I couldn't transport them myself from here on Milwaukee's East Side, and I figured an electrician would have to take them away to fix them. I described the problem to Joe, and messaged a link to the site for the lamps so he could see the specs and a picture. He asked a couple of questions, informed me of what he would charge- an amount that was reasonable to me- and best of all, informed me that he could indeed come to my residence to do the repairs! We made an appointment for the following week, and Joe arrived well within the afternoon time frame he had stated. He was very professional, fast, and polite. Every time I walk into the living room, I'm glad I made the right choice, because I can now really enjoy my floor lamps. Thank you very much, Joe. I absolutely recommend Exact Electric!"

"Overall the project went well. My house flooded and I was living with no utilities, including no running water or electricity (except for running some pumps with a generator). They came the first or second day from when I called, and hooked up an emergency outlet so I could run pumps without the generator Then they returned one or two days later to finish the work. They showed up with everything they needed, and worked in my wet basement that was full of wet debris all day, in July with no air conditioning, and yet remained pleasant throughout. I think their prices are high, but everyone raises their prices in an emergency and their work is generally very well done. They did give me credit for two outlets and light that they didn't replace. My only complaint would be that they actually placed my outlets lower on the basement walls than they were previously - even though the reason they had to be replaced is because they flooded. I would have preferred that the outlets were placed higher. Also, because they replaced three of my outlets with dedicated outlets specifically for the sump pumps, they ultimately left me with fewer usable outlets than I had, including the one that provided power to the water heater. I had to have another electrician add an outlet when I had the water heater replaced."

"This is the first time I used Mr. Sparky, and they will definitely be my new go to electricians! I love that they are a small locally owned business! I called about a small non-urgent project, and they were able to come the same day, despite being backed up due to many local flooding issues. Kasey was extremely friendly and helpful on the phone and communication was excellent from start to finish. James showed up on time and was very sweet, yet professional, and my cats even loved him :) He was respectful of me and my property, and took care of my issue in no time. The price was very reasonable! I will definitely call them again, and would highly recommend!"

"It went great! I had Chris who called when he was on his way and he completed all the work I wanted done in 1 day and in less than 5 hours! A lot of the work he had to do was not replacing but installing. I am very happy with the work and the price was reasonable with a free quote. I would definitely recommend CK Electric again!!!"

"Tech was punctual and friendly. Diagnosed the issue with the switches and outlets. Replaced half of the switches and the outlet repairing the problem. Unfortunately the new switches and outlet did not match the previous color leaving me with 2 white switches and two almond switches in the same bank of switches. Tech told me they could not make them all match because they don’t carry almond color switches. Completed after work survey and was contacted by customer service who stated that they would have a tech come back to the house and install the new white switch that i had purchased due to the inconvenience. New switch was installed without issue."

FAQs for generator repair projects in Richfield, WI

There is often some confusion about the type of work these professionals do. They only work on electrical systems such as outlets, lighting fixtures and electrical panels – they aren’t appliance repairmen.

There are three types of electricians: Master, Journeyman and Apprentice. Electrical licensing varies quite a bit by state. Some have licenses for apprentices and some do not. Some have a master’s rank while others stop at journeyman. Despite the differences, they all require a minimum amount of experience and usually classroom time.

  • Apprentice electricians aren’t usually licensed and spend 4 years learning the trade. Throughout that time, they work on a wide range of projects to learn to become a Journeyman. They’ll do basic work like installing fixtures and replacing outlets all the way to assisting in wiring a home. Regardless of the type of project, they must always be supervised by a Journeyman or Master electrician.

  • Journeymen work without supervision. In a few states, this is the highest level available and they can do all levels of work from wiring a new home to installing a light. In some states, they need a separate electrical contractor license to run a business. In places with a master’s level, a journeyman can do all work besides design new electrical systems.

  • Master electricians usually manage a shop, design new electrical systems in new construction and oversee both Journeyman and Apprentices. They typically bid new projects. Though they focus on larger projects, it’s not unheard of for a homeowner to request a Master Electrician for a house call. If you do, expect to spend up to 25% more for the visit.

Generally, you don’t tip electricians, but that’s not to say they don’t appreciate it if you do. You can offer them something to drink or eat, like coffee and donuts. Most will appreciate it if you do.

The education and certifications required to become an electrician vary by state, though they generally follow this list:

  1. Apprentice

    • Does not always require a license depending on the state.

    • Learns on the job under Journeyman and Master Electricians.

    • Usually needs 4 years on-the-job training before they can test for a Journeyman license. Many states also require a technical degree to advance.

    • Always require supervision.

  2. Journeyman

    • Needs between 8,000 to 10,000 hours of on-the-job training and usually 500 to 1,000 hours of classroom experience.

    • Can usually supervise apprentices.

    • They can diagnose and repair electrical problems.

  3. Master

    • Achieved after an additional two years (4,000 hours) working as a Journeyman and taking the Master Electrician Exam.

    • Besides diagnosing and repairing electrical systems, they also design them. In most places they run shops and inspect Journeyman and Apprentice work.

    • Not a recognized rank in all states.

  4. Electrical Contractor License is an optional license in some states for a Master Electrician to run a business. Some states have this instead of the Master license.

Electricians make an average of $26 per hour but it ranges with experience and licensing. An apprentice may make about half that while a Master Electrician may hit closer to $40 per hour. This figure represents how much they make; not how much they bill. Their salary is only one component of their costs. They must also figure in overhead, taxes, equipment, insurance and several other expenses.

Leave electrical work to the professionals. Electrical systems are complex and potentially hazardous when not handled and installed correctly. If it were easy, it wouldn’t take 4 years to become a journeyman or 6 years for a master’s license. If you are determined to forge ahead yourself, understand home electrical safety before beginning any project.Even for simple common electrical projects, a licensed pro is best. Not only is it safer, but contractors guarantee and insure their work. Hire a professional to keep your home’s electrical systems functioning properly and safely.
