"It went really well. I'd never bought dirt like this, so I was a little nervious. Angie's List doesn't have a ton of landscape supply companies for my area, but Main's popped up and had good reviews.
Their website is great. Easy to navigate options for bulk products, including all their soil types. There are pictures of what the dirt looks like, and a description of what it's used for. The table for delivery charges is clear and very informative, so I knew how much my order should have costed before I called. The dirt was $20/ sqyd and the delivery was $50. I was kind of bummed that delivery was going to be so much compared to the cost of the dirt, but that seems pretty standard as I surveyed other companies. If I had my own truck, I think i could have gone to pick it up for no extra charge.
When I called, the rep answered quickly and took my order courteously and professionally. I paid over the phone by credit card. She said the truck would arrive the next day from 11-1pm. I asked her to tell the driver to drop the dirt and quot;on the tarp on my driveway.and quot;
The driver showed up the next day at 11am sharp. He handed me the pink invoice copy and backed into my driveway. Unfortunately, the truck was too big to make it to the back section of my house, so i dragged the tarp closer to the front, and he dumped the dirt (mostly) on it. My tarp wasn't near big enough to hold it all, and some dirt fell onto my neighbor's yard. I would have been annoyed but ... I'm not really sure how that could have been avoided given the size of my driveway and the amount of dirt 3 sq yds represents.
The driver was courteous, didn't run anything over, and scooped up some dirt that was left in the truck and threw it onto my pile. All in all, it went well.
I'd definitely use Main's again. I checked out one other website (via Google, not Angie's List) and they seemed to have similar prices. A lot of landcaping supply companies have awful websites, but Main's was easy to navigate and understand.
I'll lay two tarps out next time, though!

"

"I needed to replace the sand in my two level paver patio. Most of the sand had been removed as a result of cleaning off weeds and moss that I had since the last time I put sand in the patio 4 years ago. I had two areas where the back patio needed to be re-leveled due to ants undermining the patio, plus the front walkway had to be re-leveled; ~ 35 sq ft of patio had to be re-leveled. Initially I was also going to install a new paver walkway from the front of the home to the back to match up with the existing patio. This would require moving several bushes and adding stepping stones through the landscape. I had four companies come out in Apr-May, and decided that Mike would be the best one. He was not the cheapest but not the highest either. I read the reviews on Angie's List for his company and everyone I read had very positive things to say about his company. When I showed him what needed to be done, he explained the repairs to me such that I felt like he knew what I wanted and the right way to accomplish it. We ended up postponing the walkway and just doing the repairs this year.

He scheduled me for mid June. He initially had to push me out to mid July, due to all the rain we had plus avoid our family vacation. But then he was able to come out a few days before we went on vacation to start the job. He re-leveled the areas that needed to be repaired, and replaced all the sand before we went on vacation. He was not able to get the sealer on before we left and due to his work schedule and the weather was not able to come out to do the sealing for about 2.5 weeks later. Since the pavers sat unsealed, they developed a white haze covering a good portion of them due to all the rain that occurred after he installed the sand. Not sure whether the haze was due to the initial installation of the sand or the subsequent rains that came and washed out additional glue. Regardless, he had to clean the pavers off before he could apply the sealer. He did this with no issue and applied the sealer. The patio looks like new. The areas he re-leveled eliminated the pools of water that would occur when it would rain. My wife and I are extremely happy with their work. The fact that it took much longer than anticipated I think was due mostly to things that were out of his control, (weather, vacation).

We will be calling Mike back in the fall to discuss more landscaping upgrades.

One lesson learned for me is to not wait until April-May to talk to companies about landscaping work. If you want the work done in Apr-May, you need to talk to these companies in Feb-Mar.

"

"
I cannot say enough good things about Scott Garrett and Garret Landscaping Group. I had a rather large project with a number of disparate parts and was afraid that I was going to deal with multiple contractors. Instead, Scott Garrett took charge of the entire project, bringing in a concrete/stone veneer specialist as needed, to produce a result that is truly stunning. When I look out my window at my driveway and garden, I feel as though I'm looking at a spread in a high-class magazine.

First off, Scott Garrett is an excellent listener who worked to understand what I wanted. I never felt that he was trying to impose his vision on me, but rather, that we were a team working together to bring to life my vision. Although I had a good sense of what I wanted for the driveway, I was far less certain of what to do regarding the landscaping. Scott offered suggestions for plantings that were excellent, but he was also excellent about making changes if I expressed concerns.

His proposal was extremely clear and detailed, which gave me great confidence that I knew every step (and cost) of the project before he began. Throughout the process, he maintained excellent communication with me - again giving me confidence I knew what was happening and when.

The teams that worked on the project were truly impressive for their professionalism, punctuality, respectfulness for my property, and obvious pride in their work. And most of all, they were all very nice people. The Garrett Landscaping team was on site for 4 days and worked their tails off every day. There was no music disturbing me or the neighborhood, no lunch remains left at the end of the day - just slow, steady progress on a multi-pronged project. Their fastidious prep work - for the paver driveway and the landscaping - gave me great confidence that their results would be excellent; and they were.

The concrete sub-contractors demonstrated the same qualities as the Garrett Landscaping team: professional, punctual, tidy, proud of their work, and again, just very nice people. High-quality performance characterized the work on the project, whether conducted by Garrett or his sub.

The price for this project was not cheap but I believe that I got more than my money's worth. Scott came up with creative solutions to problems that I thought were unresolvable, delivered a finished project on time and on budget, and has created an outdoor environment I truly love. But more than that, he and his team went above and beyond the original scope of the project to ensure my satisfaction and the success of the project. For example, I have mobility problems and was a bit startled when I learned that I would need to water the new plantings twice a day for a few weeks to ensure that they "took" (duh, what was I thinking? Of course you need to water new plants!). Recognizing my concern, Scott's team set up sprinkle hoses and a timer so that the plants would be watered without my having to worry about it - all at no charge.

Garrett Landscaping Group goes above and beyond expectations to deliver superior work and outstanding customer service. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

"
