"Jay at Greenland was one of few pool contractors who could design and build pool/spa but also have vision to incorporate entire site plan, extra components like bar/BBQ/outdoor spaces, and all landscaping. Most day to day work done by his own employees so not a lot of subcontractors to deal with. All workers are courteous, clean, and respectful and put in full dayà ¢à  à  s work. Overall Jayà ¢à  à  s eye for design and quality set him apart. His experience also is so valuable - there is not an aspect of a job that he doesnà ¢à  à  t have expertise of and knows where to send you to find each component. We love our new house!"

A classic piece of Americana, white picket fences are synonymous with the good life here in the U.S. While the charming look of these cultural icons may not be the right fit for everyone, it's highly doubtful that the wooden fence will ever disappear from the American landscape. Versatile, affordable, and easy on the eyes, wood fences, despite their maintenance needs and growing competition, are still a very popular choice for homeowners across the country.
Benefits
San Diego, with its generally mild climate and low frequency of precipitation, is an ideal place to install a wood fence. In other areas of the country, wood that is exposed to the elements year after year can have some real problems. Excessive moisture and dramatic temperature changes can cause wood to swell, expand, and contract. Issues like cracks, rotting, and chipping or peeling paint are quite common for wood fencing in places where the climate is not so forgiving; consequently, maintenance issues abound in these areas.
In San Diego, wood fencing is a viable option whether you want to accent the look of your home, mark your property line, or just keep pets or small children within seeing distance while they're in the yard. A wood fence is also well suited to providing a visual obstacle for passersby, giving the members of your household a bit more privacy.
Drawbacks
While you might say that things like splinters qualify as a wood fencing drawback, the biggest complaint has to do with security issues. A wood fence can certainly keep a dog from getting out, but it is a far less formidable obstacle for a person wanting to come in. If security is the primary reason you want to install a fence on your property, metal is probably a better choice.
A San Diego wood fence is, of course, less trouble than one in a place where rain is a daily ritual and temperatures change significantly over the year, but it will still need an occasional coat of paint or water sealer. One way to lessen the amount of required upkeep even further is to choose a more weather resistant species of wood for your fence. Tropical hardwoods like Ipe are growing in popularity for use in outdoor situations because they can stand up to the elements for longer periods of time. These species, however, are hard enough to be difficult to work with and are fairly expensive. Cedar, a less expensive alternative, has long been used in outdoor installation because it contains naturally occurring oil that makes it more weather and insect resistant than many other types of wood.
Prices
When pricing a wood fence, San Diego residents will notice that costs can vary greatly depending on the size of the property and the species of wood they choose. Some wood fences are purchased and installed for less than $1,000, while others can easily run $4,000 or more. Make sure to get several estimates, especially if you want something less common, as some companies that specialize in certain installations might charge less and do the job faster. In general, wood fencing is less expensive than vinyl or wrought iron fences, but is similar in price or slightly more expensive than aluminum.
