My name is Kara and my husband Jason helps me run our own small home cleaning business for the past 3 years. We cover a pretty wide range of area from Bloomington to Princeton. "The short version:
Lanz was pleasant to deal with; however, if I had blindly listened to what their technician told me, I would have purchased a new furnace (through their company!) instead of paying another company $375 to replace a warranty-covered part.
The long version:
Trevor came out to complete the furnace check and he was prompt, courteous, and wore shoe covers to protect our home's floor. Unfortunately, he found that our heat exchanger had a small crack and had to condemn our furnace. This was an unwelcome surprise to say the least.
Trevor was polite but less than helpful when it came to explaining the problem. He couldn't answer my questions about repairing the heat exchanger except to say that it would be too expensive to justify fixing our 18 year old furnace. He shut off our heat and made an appointment for a Lanz and quot;comfort consultantand quot; to discuss our options for a new furnace later that week.
I wasn't satisfied with Trevor's explanation and felt another opinion was necessary before purchasing a new furnace so I requested that Lanz send another technician. Michael, a senior technician, was at my house in less than two hours. Michael confirmed the problem and was more thorough in explaining the problem. He answered our questions and also told us that the heat exchanger was under warranty, an important fact that Trevor didn't tell us. Michael showed us and quot;the bookand quot; with Lanz's flat rate pricing and I was shocked to find that it would cost over $1,000 to replace the warranty-covered part. (And that's with our and quot;special discountand quot; as service agreement holders.)
I called several other companies to price out the labor and found that Lanz's price was WELL OVER DOUBLE the cost of every other company I contacted. I ended up using another company who replaced the part in three hours the next day. If I had listened to the first technician Lanz sent without seeking a second opinion and pricing other companies, I would have bought a new furnace instead of paying $375 for a warranty-covered part. To me, that is unacceptable. I cancelled my service member agreement (that I was encouraged to buy the first time I called) and I will not be using Lanz again.

"Asked for a quote in mid-January and Tom arrived to survey needs and made recommendations. Was looking for insulation and some sound reduction from the main floor into the basement. Had a great deal of air leaks on the foundation and well it's cold in Illinois in Jan so the furnance was working overtime, he recommended the standard 1/2 lb product. The Icynene spray foam expands to fill the gaps but does not harden like some other foam. And since it's water based, it sticks to everything. I spent about two weeks preparing the basement ceiling by moving and securing any ductwork and electrical wires. Did have to clear out the rooms since the workers needed to coat everything with plastic to prevent overspray. We posponed the work by two weeks due to a huge snow storm and a business trip I had to make. The reschedule was not a problem. Got the work crew in on 3 March for the two day job. I thought it would take longer since the basement is 2500 sqr feet with over 190 feet of sill plate, but the three person crew as done in two days. They did a great job of cleaning up the basement. Other than a bit of overspray on an old carpet, everything went great. I am planning on having Tom quote a job in the garage later this summer.

"Recharged A/C and used "stop-leak" to try to seal system. Tech made it clear there was no guarantee to seal a leak but that he has had good luck with it. Unfortunately, the A/C failed again within a few weeks and had to be replaced. This is home of my blind son. The tech could have taken advantage of him when he assisted my son in making out the check for the service call. However, he was honest and didn't abuse our trust. This deserves our appreciation.
