"Thorough Spring cleanup around the house, driveway, patio, etc., trim and prune all shrubs and evergreens, thatch and rake lawn, clean and edge all beds, put sod, fertilizer and grass seed, remove weeds, remove all winter debris, cut grass, blowdown hard surfaces, remove and dispose of all debris/materials. Rene and 3 (maybe 4) of his crew were there. Rene was primarily overseeing the work. They were there for less than 4 hours. I hired Rene Nolasco of New Generation Landscaping through Angi for a thorough spring cleanup around my home. This included trimming all shrubs and evergreens, cleaning the lawn and beds, removing weeds and debris, laying sod/loom, fertilizer, and grass seed, and mowing the lawn. Rene gave me a quote of $1,500 for the work, which he said would take most of the day on May 3, 2025. He came with 3 or 4 crew members but stayed for less than four hours. He mostly supervised rather than worked. Before starting, he had asked for a $100 deposit, supposedly to buy loom and grass seed, but never gave me a written contract even though I asked for one. On the day of the job, he changed the plan. He said he couldn't trim the evergreens as we had discussed because they might die, even though I had made it clear during our earlier meeting that I wanted them trimmed back to the retaining wall. That work wasn t done properly, and other areas he was supposed to clean were also left unfinished. He also said he would ask us how much to trim certain plants, but when he arrived, he refused to trim them at all. It felt rushed and disorganized. He even damaged some solar lights by removing them to cut the grass and never reinstalled them. The stems were broken or missing, and the lights were left lying around. When I brought it up, he said nothing would be done to fix them. He applied some loom and grass seed but told me to buy and add more for better results. I ended up buying and adding an extra 2 pounds myself. Even though we wanted to hold off on full payment until we saw results, Rene insisted on being paid in full that day. He even asked for cash, citing issues with a bounced check from another client. We paid the full $1,500 by check anyway. Afterward, I texted him about the solar lights and the incomplete cleanup. He just replied, I m sorry. I told him I expected the leftover work to be addressed during the next monthly visit (which he had said would be $50 per visit for mowing and weeding), but he never showed up. He also told me that he would do the snow cleaning/removal during the winter months for $60/snow storm (for snow 3 inches or more). I tried calling and texting several times during the first week of June, but I have not received any response to-date. So, on June 8th, I ended up cutting the grass and doing the debris cleanup myself which took me over four hours. The photos I have included are after I completed the unfinished work (June 8 and 9, 2025) see Angi pics after I cleaned up.pdf attached. Given how much work I had to do on my own and how much of the original job was left incomplete, I don t feel that the $1,500 was justified. I would like to be reimbursed for the work that was not completed properly."

A well-built retaining wall can absolutely boost home value. By carving out level space, preventing erosion, and giving your yard a clean, layered look, you raise both curb appeal and usable square footage. Home appraisers estimate a 100% to 200% return on the money you spend on building a retaining wall, especially when you choose durable materials and a design that complements the house.
Material and craftsmanship dictate how long a retaining wall lasts. Expect five to 20 years from wood, 20 to 100 from metal, 50 to 100 from concrete, and up to 200 from stone. Choose quality materials, hire an experienced installer, and schedule routine maintenance, and you’ll squeeze the maximum life out of any wall.
Yes, retaining walls require a drainage system. Without proper drainage, water builds up behind the wall and can push it forward or crack the blocks. Most pros add gravel trenches, perforated pipes, and weep holes to move rainwater and groundwater away. This simple step relieves pressure, protects the foundation, and keeps the surrounding soil in place.
Most retaining walls go up in one to three weeks. Crews start by prepping and grading the site, then pour or set footings, stack the blocks, and finish with backfill and clean-up. Bad weather, complicated terrain, or permit holdups can stretch the schedule, but an experienced contractor will build slack into the timeline and keep you informed.
