"Met with 5 different roofers for an estimate, but these guys were the most thorough, very cool technology for us to see video of our roof, inside the attack view, so we could see what was needed. Kyle, our rep, was very knowledgeable and didn't try to sell us on things we didn't need, worked to make it affordable for our options. Then Justin and the crew came and did an awesome job replacing the roof in one day. Highly recommend!"

"Fantastic! Alex was incredibly responsive throughout the preparation and installation process. I'm building an unconventional house, an Earthship, and it was an interesting challenge to bring together the original roof construction design, required updates, and the rubber roof requirements. Alex is always upbeat, patient and a pleasure to work with. Thank you!!"

"Yes the work was done. The two guys that came put in 7 windows and two big bay windows in one day. They did not even taken a break. They cleaned up the small pieces of scrap. Then one week later they came back and put in two new doors with the same professionalism when they did my doors."

"It went great! After being postponed for a while due to continuous rain, they were ready to start as soon as the skies cleared up. They estimated it would take 3 days to complete the job (new shingles, new ice and water shield, roof vents, chimney flashing and re-pointing, and new seamless gutters), it only took 2 days. Jack was very professional and helpful, as was the rest of his crew. We communicated frequently on the phone while waiting for the rain to clear up to start the job, keeping us posted on the status of other jobs. He was able to schedule our roof relatively immediately after the initial request and consultation (if it just wasn't for the rain!). His crew was prompt and had all the supplies necessary to start the roof. It didn't take nearly as long as I had anticipated, working roughly from 7:30am (I requested they start as early as they were able to in the morning) to 4:00pm both days. After each day they did a thorough job cleaning up roof debris, laying down tarps on the lawn, bushes and deck prior to beginning work to catch the falling debris, and they had a large magnet to pick up nails from the yard and driveway (no flat tires!). When ripping up the old shingles, they discovered around our chimney that the boards were rotting from water, they were able to quickly replace the plywood without problem and assured us that there didn't appear to be any further water damage than that.

So, now that the roof is complete, it looks beautiful! The craftsmanship and color of the shingles looks great and we are very excited about it. The chimney also is in better condition with the re-pointing and new flashing around the base. Our new gutters will be attached on Saturday (a week ahead of anticipation too), and Jack highly recommended the person who will be doing this job.

Jack and Affordable Roofing guarantees their craftsmanship for 10 years, and the shingles for at least 15 years. I am very pleased with the work provided and the knowledge that Jack has been doing this for almost 30 years. I most certainly will contact Affordable Roofing in the future for any other renovation I might need on my house (they do more than just roofs!)"

FAQs for heating cable for roof installation projects in South-barre, VT

A typical heat cable uses 5 watts per foot, regardless of the outside temperature. So, if your cable is 100 feet long, it uses 500 watts per hour. Expect to pay an additional $40 to $200 or more per month on your electricity bill. Be sure to turn manual cables off in the summer when you don't need them.

To install heat tape on your roof, place it along the lower edge in a precise zig-zag pattern to maximize coverage and heat distribution. Professional installers secure the tape with specialized clips that attach firmly to your shingles. This method ensures even heat distribution to effectively melt ice and snow while maintaining your roof's integrity during severe winter conditions.

Choosing between heated gutters and roof heating cables usually comes down to budget, appearance, and performance. Heated gutters cost less to install and blend seamlessly with your home’s exterior, making them a discreet, lower-cost option for preventing ice dams. Roof heating cables deliver more customizable and powerful heat along roof edges to handle heavy snow and ice, but they require more material and labor, increasing your upfront investment. Evaluate your roof design, winter weather demands, and energy budget to select the system that works best for your property.

Roof heating cables prevent ice dams by melting snow and stopping ice buildup at the roof edge. Ice damming occurs when melting snow refreezes on a cold roof—often right above the gutter line—and blocks water from draining, which can force moisture under shingles into your home. Heating cables maintain a warm channel that clears ice dams as soon as they form and protects your roof from water damage and structural issues.

Roof heating cables last between two and ten years before replacement is needed, wearing out faster than your roof itself. Their lifespan depends on climate severity, cable type, and exposure to physical damage. Consistent inspections and preventative maintenance—such as clearing debris, tightening clips, and checking electrical connections—can extend their service life and ensure reliable snow and ice protection each winter.

To safely remove snow from your roof, start with a specially designed roof rake, standing firmly on the ground and pulling snow downhill rather than climbing onto the roof. You can also apply calcium chloride ice melt to break up stubborn ice or gently use a secured rope from a safe vantage point.

Keep in mind that large snow slabs can weigh hundreds of pounds and pose a serious fall risk. If conditions are hazardous or you lack the right equipment, hire a professional to protect your safety and your roof’s integrity.
