"Almstead came to trim one very large and three smaller trees in the small yard behind our Brooklyn brownstone. I was extremely impressed by how they scaled the large tree to cut huge branches and lower them down carefully so that they didn't fall into the neighbors yards. They removed all the branches and cleaned up any remaining debris. They were quick, efficient and very professional. I would highly recommend them."

"They are great. They really have to maneuver their equipment around my pool and nothing as ever knocked my wood or dropped anywhere on anything. There is a 50 feet Oak that they managed to take care of. It is family owned, very professional, very quick. I called them this afternoon and they came and did the estimate. They are a town business. They are the only tree company i have used. They are very response. He told me he would be here between 3 or 4 and he was here at 3:05."

"We did not have the best luck getting a timely response, Arthur suggested meeting at a nursery but as we tried to finalize a date/time he revised and said he was not available that week.  Three attempts (two emails and one voicemail) to get him to contact me on my cell phone (since I was repeatedly away from my email) got no response.  His final response suggested he was unaware we had tried to contact him and thought we had gone with someone else but he made to effort to reach out to us even though we had told him we wanted to move forward and were trying to arrange a time.  In my opinion he assumed that since we been unable to connect on the first couple attempts that we had gotten frustrated and found another contractor, either he didn't care enough about our business or was too busy to care.  We had gotten three estimates  and this one was in the middle of the range suggesting the pricing was probably at least fair though without seeing his work that is an incomplete assessment. <br />"

"My previous contractor picked up and left town last November, and he really didn't do a Fall cleanup other than leaves that got caught up with the mowing and clearing. About a month ago, I started checking around for a new lawn maintenance contractor, reaching out to friends and then Angieslist. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a local contractor on the List. Living on an island -even a New York City borough (Staten Island), I've learned that contractors from Brooklyn, New Jersey, Queens, and Long Island charge for bridge tolls which add considerably to the expenses. (Some even want to charge for driving time and gas.) <br /> <br /> Finally a friend got back to me last week with a name and a number, Greenlawn. I called them on Tues, April 10, and made an estimate appointment for Wednesday afternoon. Bill Thomas showed up promptly and surveyed the situation. He gave me an proposal for $300 for the Spring cleanup, a $100 monthly service cost (which is for 3 cuttings and 2 edgings every 8-10 days), and disposal of debris for my 60 x 200 foot property. (He informed me that he would charge $33 for the last cut of April.) These prices are comparable to the two previous contractors I have had over the past 14 years, and so I agreed, and he gave me a very detailed and informative, helpful proposal outlining his various services and charges for extras like hedge-trimming and planting. We scheduled an appointment for today. <br /> <br /> Greenlawn arrived about 10:45 this morning and finished up about 3:15pm including a lunch break. I had asked him if they could cut back a 2-3 foot swath of English Ivy that was overgrowing my side yard which added some time to the job. They also removed a dead possum they came across. I added $50 to the bill for this extra work. . <br /> <br /> Greenlawn is triply-licensed. I was very satisfied with the work and professionalism of this company."

FAQs for lawn care aeration projects in Staten Island, NY

Aeration is the best way to keep your lawn healthy and vibrant. Annual aeration makes your lawn more breathable and helps nutrients reach the roots, improving water absorption and reducing puddles where pests might breed. However, timing matters. It's best to avoid aerating during droughts, extreme heat, or if your lawn is battling weeds. A local pro can help you determine the ideal time for your yard.

Most lawns benefit from annual aeration to keep them healthy and thriving. If your lawn has a lot of thatch buildup—more than half an inch—you might need to aerate twice a year for a couple of years to get it under control. But if your soil isn't compacted and there's minimal thatch, you might be able to skip a year.

When you hire a professional lawn care company, a standard 10,000-square-foot lawn takes about 30 minutes to aerate. Uneven, sloped, or especially large lawns can take significantly more time. So, depending on your lawn's size and condition, the process can take anywhere from half an hour to several hours.

The best time to aerate your lawn is during the spring or fall when your grass is actively growing and the soil has enough moisture. Aerating once in the spring and once in the fall yields the best results. Avoid aerating when your lawn is dormant or right after heavy rain when the soil is too wet—that can make aeration less effective.

Even if your lawn looks healthy, aeration can still be beneficial. If you have good growth, proper drainage, and little thatch, you might not need to aerate right away. Regular aeration helps water and nutrients reach the roots, keeping your lawn strong over time. Keep an eye on your lawn's condition to decide when it might need aeration.
