Small jobs welcome

"Mike is an excellent communicator and worked with us to get the kind of deck and railing we wanted. He was also attentive to our desire to do some water mitigation before the deck got put on. We appreciated that he started the project on time and was diligent to complete. We are thrilled with the end result and the quality of the work. Great to work with! Highly recommend O'Donnell Builders."

"I got three estimates and went with Deneve. I am pleased with my choice, and after 3 years and still glad. Our neighborhood had a hailstorm and everyone needed new siding. Although Deneve had more customers in line, waiting for their house to get new siding, I never felt that they rushed or in any way compromised the job just to hurry on to the next one.The craftsmen  were all very punctual, professional and picked up after themselves really well. There was a younger guy who seemed to be new and he was carefully supervised, positively supported and was a great addition to the work group. Just as important as the good job they did with the siding, they helped me solve 2 problems I'd been having with the house: Birds kept building nests at the top of the brick columns on my front porch so they fashioned a solution with metal break.  I had previously had an occasional leak from rainwater getting behind my old siding during hard rainstorms. They took special care with the siding in that area and have said that if that happens again with their siding they stand behind their work and will come remedy it."

"Kris contacted me and came out the same day I entered my request for some interior trim and door work. Compared to the other bid I recieved and my own costing estimate, hhe came in with a more than reasonably bid. Kris made himself available to come out 3 days later and it took him less than one day to complete a job I imaged myself taking a week to do. I was more than impressed at the quality of work performed and even though more supplies were needed, the bid came in at the same price agreed upon. Kris was professional and easy to talk to. I would highly recommend Kris as a contractor and plan to have him back in the future for some additional projects."

"Bill was very prompt at coming out and giving us an estimate we couldn't quite afford a full deck replacement but he came up with a great idea that would keep us safe and be able to utilize his safety measure in the building of Our Deck next year. I so appreciate his professionalism and letting us know that there's other options than just you have to replace the whole deck I found his honesty refreshing and he is more than fair with his prices and a wonderful personality I would definitely recommend this professional to anyone for anything."

"I took advantage of the Angie's List Deal of 2 hours of handyman work for $80.

I called and he stopped out that same day to discuss the project. Came back the next morning, 8 AM sharp and got the done- BAM

Hauled away all the old unwanted material.

He was professional, congenial, very generous in sharing his knowledge. I had also wanted to refinish the windowsills in my  house by myself so he picked up the appropriate sander for me. He taught me how to use it, gave me advice on where to get the best products I would need, offered to let me call for further advice if needed.

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Swisher, IA

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
