"Rick (owner) was very helpful and professional. He and Brian and Tom (the daily crew) were very cooperative and responded to our requests for the little extras that make a job go from good to outstanding. The custom cabinets are excellent and the quality of the refacing is as good as can be expected due to conditions in the existing cabinets that were covered. Overall we're very pleased with the outcome and would use Jade again. To date (approximately 7 months ago) everything is holding up very well."

"We selected Kepner - even though the price was a premium over the next bidder - for exhibited knowledge, professionalism, and quality of the product in the show room.  As is I assume is often the case with large jobs like this there were a few surprises along the way - a cabinet showing up broken, the soffit removal revealing pipes that needed to be covered, and a few other miscellaneous gotchas.  None of them were extreme and we felt that each time there was a surprise that was revealed, Mark Kepner responded with integrity and did not gouge us for any extra added cost.  As the job proceeded there were a few surprises we gave him as well!  The decision to add lights under cabinets, install new light fixtures, add a back splash, and even hang new doors.  Each time Mark was responsive to our needs and did his best to accomodate us in his schedule.  He was able to perform nearly all of the jobs himself with minimal subcontracting.  Overall the job took the bulk of the summer from start to finish, including floor installation, cabinets, waiting for templating of counter top, all lighting and door installations.  And though I can't say it was "painless", Kepner made it as smooth as possible.  About the only improvement I could suggest is that of cleanup.  We were left responsible for tidying up during the process and finally at the end as well. I would have liked to see a bit more professionalism there.  Even though the large scale trash removal was included, there was an additional pickup required at the end as there were some more large items that needed to be removed.  We paid separately for that. A nice touch would have been to include it. Also the quantity of flooring material was overestimated and so we were left with significantly more flooring material than we required.  And were unable to negotiate a reasonable cost of return.  We are hanging on to it and can almost do another full (small) room!  All that said we were very pleased with the quality of the workmanship and the responsiveness of the Kepners.  Mark worked very hard and we are truly grateful.  And in the final analysis I must say, we just LOVE our new kitche.   I would definitely hire them again! <br />"

"I could not say enough about how wonderful they all were. I would recommend them to anybody. They really cared. I had picked out a countertop and I was talking to one of the owners, that’s Pam. I was talking to Pam about what I was doing with the kitchen. It's a Cambria countertop, which is not cheap. She called me back a couple of days later and she said, “I went to a party last night and they had the counter top that you asked for. I don’t think it’s what you want!” I said, what do you mean?” She said, “There’s a lot of blue in it!” I wanted the kitchen red. If she had not called me and just ordered it, what would I have done? I would have had to swallow the cost. When I picked out the cabinets, I had to pick out the style of the cabinet, the wood I wanted on the cabinets, the finish I wanted on the cabinet and the color. I did all of that and again Pam says to me, “that sounds really nice, here’s a door in exactly what you want. Take this home, put it in your kitchen, look at it all day long.” Well, inside of 12 hours I hated it. In my kitchen, it looked totally different. It has to do with the lighting, the time of day, it’s just, it isn’t what I wanted. Because, she was she let me take that home I was able to change my mind. A lot of people don’t do that. They were fantastic, I can’t say enough about them. They timed everything so like when you are having a new garbage disposal put in, you need an electrician & a plumber. As the plumber was walking out, the electrician was walking in. There was no time delay at all, there was no time wasted anywhere. I would recommend them."

"Tom refaced our kitchen cabinets, replacing the doors and installing slide-out shelves and self-closing drawers below the counters, plus build a new cabinet with drawers. It was a pretty big job and took a few weeks. Worth every nickel. A much better set up now; everything looks and works great. He cleaned up at the end of each day so we could still use the kitchen. We would hire him again in a heart beat."

"Craig built us a beautiful 12x24 deck in 2018. We hired him again in 2020 to finish the attic above our garage. He is meticulous in his work and is very flexible with what you ask him to do. He leaves the area clean after each day and was a pleasure to work with. He's the only guy I'll use for any remodels /carpentry work in the future. Thank you Craig!"

FAQs for cabinets refinish projects in Troy, NY

To find the best cabinet refinishing expert for your project, start by researching local pros and reading reviews from previous customers. Reach out to a few contractors to discuss your cabinets' size, condition, and the look you're aiming for. Don't hesitate to ask for references or examples of their past work. Speaking with previous clients can give you valuable insights into the pro's workmanship and reliability.

When speaking with potential cabinet refinishing pros, consider asking them several questions to gauge their experience and professionalism. These questions can help you gauge the pro's experience and determine if they align with your needs.

  • Do you offer a guarantee on your work?

  • Can you create custom finishes or colors?

  • Do you have examples or samples of your past projects?

  • Are you able to match the finish to other cabinets in my home?

  • How long will the project take from start to finish?

Regular care will help maintain the beauty of your cabinets for years to come. To keep your refinished cabinets looking their best, follow these steps:

  • Use gentle cleaners: Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals that can damage the finish. A simple mixture of warm water and mild dish soap works well.

  • Clean carefully: Instead of spraying solutions directly onto the cabinets, apply them to a soft microfiber cloth and wipe gently.

  • Protect from heat and moisture: Try to minimize exposure to excessive heat or moisture, which can affect the finish over time.

It's usually less costly to refinish cabinets than to replace them, depending on the cabinet condition. Refinishing cabinets cost an average of $3,114 while replacing cabinets is about $5,000 or more. When deciding to refinish or replace cabinets, consider several factors, including how old your cabinets are, your budget, and whether you need to complete any other renovation projects at the same time.

It may be worth resurfacing (also known as refacing) your cabinets if they’re in good shape but you’re interested in a different look. This is often less expensive than replacing cabinets outright and can allow you to update the look of your cabinets to reflect your kitchen’s current style without having to get rid of them entirely. The cost to reface cabinets is around $4,300 to $10,000, and you can hire a local cabinet refacing pro to handle this work.

Refinishing cabinets takes about two to three days to complete. The process begins with removing cabinet doors, drawers, and hardware, followed by cleaning, stripping, and sanding the surfaces. Any chips, stains, or splits are repaired before applying paint or stain. After applying the finish, the cabinets are reassembled, and the workspace is cleaned up, leaving your cabinets refreshed and renewed.
