My request was a little out of the ordinary as I was looking to purchase a gift for a co-worker out on medical leave and wanted it to be a surprise. Jeff Haines was able to conduct an estimate of the property without letting the recipient of the gift know. Jeff Haines and I agreed on a price and he mailed me a gift voucher to present in my co-workers get well card. Jeff was very responsive with replies to my messages to him. A pleasure to do business with. I should not rate the quality of work as this has to be scheduled with the recipient but if it is anything like his communication and willingness to work with me I would say it will be 5 stars - so that is what I gave. "I had a totally overgrown city corner lot. Joe and his team cleared the lot of a rusty broken chain link fence, vines, bushes, weeds, and poison ivy quickly and efficiently. The lot was then graded, making it a perfect blank slate to install the hardscape. Joe was masterful at taking my abstract ideas and turning them into a work of art. I wanted a design that is low maintenance, aesthetically pleasing, and appropriate for an urban setting and I got EXACTLY that! His team of workers are skilled, professional, and every so patient! This was not an easy job, especially during this summer’s heat wave. The logistics were formidable, but they were certainly well equipped for the job."

"Horrible Experience. I contracted with Blackwood Group, LLC in July 2024 for a driveway demolition, wall build and decorative stamped concrete driveway installation. During the course of the project, representatives of Blackwood lied to me, screamed at me, hung up on me, used profanity directed at me, sent a crew that refused or didn’t know how to follow the engineering drawings or guidance from Versa Lok for the wall build, and generally made the project a miserable experience. The job was not completed in a workmanlike manner and to the quality that was described in the contract. The work stopped in August 2024. The quality of the work was so poor that Pete Blackwood (owner of Blackwood Group) came onsite to look at it and agreed that it needed to be ripped out and re-done. He agreed that he would do that. Pete spent the Fall of 2024 attempting to find a suitable contractor that could complete the job but was not successful. Additionally, there is damage that the Blackwood Group work crew caused to the front of our house - concrete spatter on front door, concrete spatter on the front trim (newly painted) around door, concrete spatter on the brick front of the house, and concrete spatter on a planter. Blackwood Group work crew also damaged our in-ground sprinkler system so that the zone near the front of the house doesn't work any longer. As of today, no work to fix the issues has been done. We had paid him $37600. He offered to refund $18650 and stated that he still wants to do the work and then when complete, we would pay him the remaining amount outlined in the contract. He did refund $18650. He informed us 2 weeks ago that Blackwood Group was for sale and he was in talks with a buyer. At that point, we told him that we want all of our money back. Pete has agreed to refund the balance back to us, but has yet to refund us. He still owes us ~$19000 not including the legal fees that we have incurred because of this situation. In summary, I DO NOT RECOMMEND."

"Stop your search...call Zalar's. Our highest compliment is they treated our lawn as if it were their own. A very large maple tree was taken down in late fall so a complete redo of the front yard was needed. The tree cast complete shade on the front so there virtually was no grass...and heavy Pittsburgh clay soil. The ground was prepared and seeded, weeds and old shrubs removed, all beds were mulched, beautiful new shrubs were planted, and a very, very heavy lawn ornament was picked-up and installed. Beyond the very fair, highly competitive price, Adam and Eric proved to be highly skilled craftsmen. They made excellent suggestions which improved our initial plans. The smallest detail did not escape their attention. Zalar's has our unqualified endorsement."
