"Paul squeezed me in the same day as I called him. He fixed a broken toilet and we are having him come back for additional plumbing work. He is easy to get a hold of and communicate with. He explains everything and his costs are great. We will continue to use him in the future!"

"Scott came out to do the repairs. I had several plumbing issues and didn't expect to have them all completed the same day, but Scott managed to get them all done in one afternoon, including making s run for parts and a new disposal. He explained the cause of each issue and his planned fix before he went ahead. Most of of it ended up being relatively small repairs but I know some plumbers would have replaced rather than fixed to make more money. Very honest, good communication, reasonable pricing, skilled work - I will call them for all of my plumbing needs."

"This was a refurbishment of a commercial space. Herr Plumbing removed all plumbing in an used restroom so it could be torn out, and relocated/replaced a water heater. They located a toilet drain for a new restroom, and then completed the plumbing for that restroom when the framing was complete. They returned one more time to install all the fixtures. Herr Plumbing was timely and professional, and did great work!"

"It went very well. Joe arrived in when expected, he gave me an estimate on repairing my old toilet or replacing it. I chose to replace. We set up a time for the following day. He was on time and had my new toilet in in no time. He was very professional. Cleaned up after himself. Will request him for any work I need done in the future."

"We have 1960's ranch on a lot with several mature trees, so tree roots are occasionally on issue for us. I contacted three different local plumbing/sewer service companies and all three, including Des Moines Drain and Sewer Cleaning, just took my name and number and said a member of their service team would contact me. Evidently, this is pretty standard operation across the business. But then again, it's probably impossible to give perspective customers a definite time went it's not clear just how long each job takes. I decided that the one that called me back first would get my business and that I would cancel the others. I'm sooooo glad it was Des Moines Drain and Sewer that called me back. Our service person (sadly I forgot to write down his name) was fantastic. Since I was at work at the time he called, he asked how long it would take for me to meet him at the house. I told him 20 minutes and when I arrived, he was there waiting for me! He had evidently just pulled up to my house about 5 minutes before I got there. He asked questions about the nature of the problem. He then went straight to work trouble shooting by inspecting the drain, running several sources of water within the house to see the problem in action. He confirmed my suspicion about tree roots slowing the drain. I was VERY impressed with his professionalism and efficiency. He brought in a high power auger and covered his work area to prevent mess in there was any, he then took care of the issue and disposed of the tree roots. He offered some suggestions to slow the re-occurrence of roots. I would most definitely do business with Des Moines Drain and Sewer Cleaning again! <br />"

FAQs for plumbing installation for a remodel or addition projects in West Des Moines, IA

Adding bathroom plumbing to a detached garage starts with the basic line installation cost of $900 to $1,300. On top of this base expense, you'll need to budget for each fixture. A toilet costs  $250 to $550, sinks cost $150 to $800, and a shower or bathtub costs $400 to $1,900. The project will also require ventilation, moisture-resistant materials, and possibly electrical work. Remember that these costs reflect only the plumbing aspects—additional construction, finishing, and permitting expenses will apply to complete a functional bathroom space.

While certain aspects of garage renovation might be suitable for DIY enthusiasts, plumbing installation requires professional expertise. Connecting to water and sewer systems demands specialized knowledge and equipment, and improper installation can result in severe water damage, code violations, and potential health hazards. Most municipalities require permits for plumbing modifications, and these often stipulate that licensed professionals must perform work. Consider limiting your involvement to simpler tasks like painting or basic finishing work.

The timeframe for adding plumbing to a detached garage spans one to three days for the actual plumbing work. However, this represents only the active installation period. The complete project timeline must account for planning, obtaining permits (which can take weeks depending on your locality), coordinating multiple contractors if needed, and addressing any unexpected challenges that arise during installation. Weather conditions can also impact excavation and outdoor connection work.

Adding plumbing to a detached garage will likely increase your property taxes. Tax assessors consider plumbing an improvement that enhances property value and functionality. The specific tax impact varies by location and project scope. Converting a garage into living space with plumbing facilities can trigger significant reassessment in many jurisdictions. Before proceeding with your project, consult your local tax assessor's office to understand the potential tax implications and factor this ongoing expense into your decision-making process.
