"We hired Lana Nguen to design a fireplace. We have a tricky space between two windows in a two-story living room, and we wanted someone professional get the fireplace right. We made our expectations very clear â design a fireplace and provide all measurements. Lana agreed, but as we later learnt she never measured the space (point A to B, from window to window) and relied on some device, which as she later admitted â is inherently incorrectâ . She indicated all measurements on the drawing, but never told us, her clients, that her measurements are approximate, and we had no clue. If this is how you do business, it is fine, but either warn your client or donâ t include measurements at all and let someone knowledgeable figure it out! We gave Lanaâ s documentation to a stone company, and they fabricated and installed a marble fireplace, which is too big. It is stuck between the windows and is clearly out of proportion with the rest of the room. I am heartbroken every time I look at it. It was supposed to be the centerpiece of the house. It was very costly, and the redo is a fortune! We had a Zoom meeting with the firmâ s owner, Jonathan Gordon, and he was so rude, pointing his finger and screaming at us! He blamed everyone but himself and so did Lana Nguen. Eventually, Jonathan Gordon stopped responding to our emails, which only proves that this firm is absolutely unprofessional and unwilling to fix problems when they arise. Itâ s a shame such companies exist! STAY AWAY from them! Lastly, let me point out that Lana Nguen found the design of our fireplace on Pinterest and reproduced it, so we found her neither creative nor competent."

"I hired Deb to put together creative design ideas to renovate both my front entry living room and home office. Both rooms turned out fantastic. What a transformation. She also introduced me to an excellent contractor who I hired to do the improvements. Overall very pleased with outcome. Deb helped us transform our drabby front entrance to a coastal retreat. Our home office is now open, light and organized!"

"Revision Construction (David Horwich) is an excellent, high quality builder. He is neither fast nor cheap — but experience has taught us to no longer choose that kind of solution. David is meticulous, thoughtful, and has good taste. His team does careful, solid, high-quality workmanship. We initially connected with David after a basement flood when neither the insurance company nor other professionals could diagnose the cause. He was the only one who figured out what had actually happened. We first engaged him to waterproof our basement, then eventually to build it out into a beautifully finished and useful space. He stripped the basement down to the concrete, put in a robust French drain and sump pump, and re-did pipes and ducts to raise the ceiling so that it no longer feels cramped. He installed a mini-split for heating and AC, created closets for storage and to hide utilities, and designed a custom bookshelf and entertainment center all along one wall. We love it!"

FAQs for kitchen design service projects in Norwalk, CT

A professional kitchen designer is a specialist in planning and implementing the remodel of kitchen spaces. They'll help you pick materials and styles, give you a quote, render a model, and send the order to manufacturers and installers. You can think of them as creative project managers who will facilitate your kitchen project from start to finish.

No, a kitchen designer can't plan for structural remodeling since kitchen designers aren’t structural experts. Consult a pro for structural engineer fees and inquire about changes like removing a wall. Additionally, for changes to your kitchen's electrical, plumbing, or gas lines, you'll need to hire the appropriate professionals, like a licensed electrician or plumber near you.

A kitchen designer’s process includes the following:

  • Finding inspiration: They may ask for photos, feedback on material samples, and preferred fittings to understand your vision.

  • Using design tools: These include computer modeling software, 3D and high-resolution cameras for recording your space, color wheels, and sketches.

  • Considering appliances and fixtures: It’s important that each item is installed correctly, balances aesthetics and functionality, and is conveniently positioned in a kitchen work triangle.

  • Looking at the whole home: A designer will consider your home's age and style.

  • Writing up plans: After taking measurements, they create a plan based on your specifications.

It takes anywhere from 10 to 20 hours for a professional kitchen designer to come up with a fully fleshed-out plan for a mid-size kitchen. However, that time can increase if you ask for a complex, custom-designed plan. Ask your designer for a quote on both pricing and overall time frame before you start working together to ensure you're on the same page with expectations.

If you're doing an extensive kitchen renovation, hire a kitchen designer to manage the project and ensure things go smoothly for you. A major renovation may include new flooring, countertops, cabinets, lighting, and structural changes like knocking out a wall or upgrading the electrical, plumbing, or gas lines. If you're doing something more minor, like only replacing a sink or painting your cabinets, you can either pay for installation or DIY.
