"Ricardo called the next day and he met with me as agreed. His bid was the most fair for a Great room, dining room, 3 bedrooms, 11 stairs, foyer and entertainment room. He also agreed to do the job as requested over a two week period. He helped us move heavy furniture which not many would do. He and his crew were very nice. The floors came out Great! Thanks"

"I couldn't have been more pleased with the outcome of this project and with hiring Ateba for the job. Right from the outset, I had a great feeling that I had selected the right person for the project. I left a message for Ateba and he responded in less than a day. In our initial discussion, I shared with Ateba the kind of playset I wanted to create and that I needed him primarily to cut the wood and drill the holes I would need. From just that conversation, I could tell he was an expert at his craft. I had every intention of assemblying the playset myself but I soon learned that I would need the assistance of someone like Ateba if the project was going to be a success. Turns out he not only did the necessary cuts to the wood with expert precision (some more complex than others) and drilled the holes (both through holes and countersink holes), but he also helped me assemble the playet and level it for safety. About the only thing he did not do was stain the wood - I did that myself before he came to start the project. I was highly impressed with the professional manner in which he approached his craft (carpentry) and the knowledge that he brought to the table. Ateba was always very punctual and showed a bias for going above and beyond in every way. He wasn't willing to settle for "just ok" and so we made the adjustments to ensure that the playset would be one that my grandchildren and great grandchildren will one day play on. I could not have done something like this on my own despite believing I would at the outset. Ateba is the real deal. Having worked closely with him for a number of days, I can tell you that he has a great attitude and is determined to deliver on your goals. He's also a very fair and genuine person that isn't out to scam you. His personality is such that you'll want to go grab a beer with him. If you have any carpentry needs, I can assure you that you'll get more than your money is worth with Ribba Wood Working."

His work ethic is clear as he is punctual and hardworking throughout each and every project. His work is flawless! We could not have been happier with the results of each and every project. From new flooring, to installation projects, to painting jobs and much more, Matt is a truly gifted contractor. There really isn't anything he can't do. I appreciated his honesty and overall professionalism. Every estimate and project was done in a timely manner. My husband and I find comfort in the fact that Matt will always get back to us promptly. "Went to store front on saturday to look at sample railings. Staff was very helpful. Gave me some catalogues to take home and an appointment for Tuesday for an estimate. On Tuesday Jeff called and said he was running ahead of schedule and asked if he could come an hour earlier. Came and showed us some examples and discussed how certain railings would look and what our steps could "handle". Made our selection and got an install date for 2 weeks later. At 9am on 11/12 Alex and his associate showed up and got to work. The two men were professional and meticulous about what they were doing. It seeemed as thought they were installing the railings on their own home. When they were done they cleaned the area so it looked like the railings were always there. The finished work is perfect and we are thrilled that we chose Fence Depot.

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Wharton, NJ

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
