"Sections of this brick façade had been repointed with a hard gray mortar that stood out from the original joints. The repair itself had not cracked, but the softer brick around it was beginning to chip and lose its face. Moisture was escaping through the brick because it could not move through the dense mortar normally. The inappropriate mortar was removed in small sections to avoid damaging adjacent units. A compatible mortar was selected based on the existing brick and original joint material rather than color alone. Joints were repointed to their original profile and protected from drying too quickly while they cured. The building remained occupied, with window protection moved as the work progressed down the wall. Dust was collected at the scaffold level, and the sidewalk enclosure was cleaned each afternoon. No aggressive pressure washing was used on the older brick. After curing, the new joints blended more naturally and did not leave the surrounding brick as the weakest part"
