"We hired a large hardscape project to be completed in 4-6 weeks from a landscape company. When that landscaper was unable to complete the job and abandoned the job late in the fall (in breech of contract), we hired Smith Tree and Landscape to complete minimal work to mitigate safety concerns for the condition the the first landscaper left the yard in. This included making the front walk usable and the front door accessible, removing excess material from the original grade, and general clean up. I had met with the designer for Smith Landscaping to walk through the project site and we agreed to a scope of work. After Smith Tree and Landscape staff were onsite for 2 hours, the job was presented as completed. Unfortunately, a number of items previously confirmed to be in scope were not completed. Another staff person (Mark) followed up and arranged for some of the items to be completed as previously agreed to, but indicated there was not enough material onsite to bring the walkway to the front of the house to a height in which the previously installed step could be used to access the front porch (The previous walkway was removed by the earlier landscape and left dug out in prep for base material, uneven, and covered with leaves. Smith Tree was going to grade and cover with plywood). After much back and forth and follow up, Mark constructed steps for use in accessing the front porch. Mark however, indicated that was not enough material on site to address the height of the walk. As compensation to not filling the trenches or raising the level of walk, Mark offered a discount to the balance, but despite multiple requests, an adjusted statement was never received to reflect the adjustment. With the thaw in the spring, we were able to confirm that in excess of 6" of new material was left over the original grade in much of the yard, despite being very clear about not having more than 2" of additional material (more than 2" can cause damage to the root system of the trees in the yard). Also this spring, the steps failed while someone was stepping up on the front porch causing minor personal injury. Smith did not respond to communication regarding our concerns with the steps provided. When we removed the broken steps, we lifted the plywood to find no grading or raking had been done - as they was a layer of leaves under the plywood. We also added 6 wheelbarrow loads of dirt to the area to raise the grade (without making a dent in the material left in the yard) in to easily use the previous step. And despite asking to meet in person and follow up communication that we had not received an updated balance statement, they referred our account to collections. Prior to this, we had been a long term customer of Smith Tree and Landscape using their tree related services to maintain the health of the trees in our yard. I do not know if the lack of customer service or concern for customer safety is a result of recent company organizational changes, but given the lack of quality services and care for public safety, we will not be using them again."
