"John Gilley who did my quote was very unresponsive when trying to be reached after my estimate was given. I’m an Army Soldiet so I had to explain what I needed through pictures and email. Nor am I a professional when it comes to roof repairs and terminology. I thourughly explained that I had wood issues (main concern) and Roof second as it could have waited, I was advised that I could use a new roof and I even decided to get new gutters. I thought from the after pictures that they did a great job. A few weeks later went to another company for a Sifing estimate and he advised me of all the damage that still remained. Inevrt would have known. I called chase roofing on the issue and basically was given the run around for a month. The owner Jose then tells me that it was not included in my quote. Again I don’t live in Virginia and expected quality as they had great reviews. I am attaching pictures of all the damaged wood that still remains. There is no way I would spend the money that I did for a new Roof and gutters and not correct the underneath damage that needed to be corrected. Like painting a wrecked car. That would make sense to me or anyone else. There-was no apology from Jose or a mends to fix it only that I would be charged. Very disappointed that I spent my hard earned dollars with this company. Only to still have to spend more money. Would have rather had it done right the first time. Very disgruntled,"

"Scott and his team went far above and beyond my expectations. From the very beginning I was impressed. Scott showed up to my house on-time for my initial estimate and was very helpful and polite. He sent me an estimate with a long list of previous customers that I could use for references. SB Roofing was an easy choice. I'm glad I went with them. His team showed up early the day of the work and stayed late to make sure everything was done. SB Roofing gave me the best service from ANY company I've seen in YEARS! I keep giving away his business cards to friends and co-workers!"

"Excellent. We have used Phil for years. Shamus his lead supervisor can be depended on to go beyond the obvious issue and finds the systemic problem that needs repair. The Florida room had a water leak but Shamus identified a vent stack problem were the flashing was letting water enter with roof damage and water entering the Florida room ceiling with a water leak. This is not the first time Shamus has done this and in some cases, the fixes are just preventative maintenance."

"RA Woodall and Son did a great job; their estimate was reasonable, they had a quick response time to questions, the work was done as scheduled, and the crew were polite and cleaned up after project completion. The new roof does wonders for the curb appeal of our house."

"I requested a quote for a roof leak repair around a vent stack and was told there was a $295 charge for the estimate because the home is for sale. I did not use their service since other companies were not charging for repair estimates."

FAQs for roofing installation & roof repair projects in Yorktown, VA

An average Cape Cod roof-raising project requires approximately two to three months from start to finish. The timeline depends on several variables, including weather conditions, contractor availability, material delivery schedules, and the specific complexity of your home's structure. The process involves multiple phases, including demolition, framing, roofing, window installation, and interior finishing. Working with an experienced contractor who provides a detailed timeline can help set realistic expectations for the project duration.

While most Cape Cod homes can accommodate roof-raising modifications, each house requires individual structural assessment. Older homes may need foundation reinforcement or wall strengthening before supporting additional weight. Factors like the existing roof framing system, load-bearing wall placement, and overall structural integrity all influence feasibility. A qualified structural engineer should evaluate your specific property before proceeding with design plans. Additionally, local zoning ordinances may restrict maximum building height or architectural modifications in certain neighborhoods.

Temporary relocation is highly recommended during a Cape Cod roof raising project. The construction process involves removing portions of your existing roof, exposing interior spaces to potential weather damage, and creating significant noise and dust. Most homeowners find temporary accommodations for the two to three-month construction period, with relocation costs ranging from $2,000 to $6,000, depending on your housing choices. If staying with family or friends isn't possible, budget for short-term rental or extended-stay hotel expenses as part of your overall project cost.

Consider roof raising when you experience severely limited headroom throughout the second floor, find yourself constantly stooping under sloped ceilings, or have minimal usable floor space due to low ceiling heights. Other indicators include inadequate natural light, poor ventilation, and difficulty accommodating standard furniture in upstairs rooms. Simple renovations can improve an attic's appearance, but cannot create additional headroom without structural modifications. A complete roof-raising project makes more sense than cosmetic renovations if you're seeking genuine second-floor living space rather than just storage improvements.

Begin your search by seeking contractors with specific experience in Cape Cod structural modifications and dormer additions. Request detailed portfolios showing similar completed projects and ask for references from previous clients with comparable work. Verify that potential contractors hold appropriate licenses and insurance coverage and understand local building codes relevant to roof raising. Interview multiple candidates, comparing price quotes and their communication style, project approach, and proposed timeline. The ideal contractor should demonstrate a thorough understanding of Cape Cod architectural characteristics and structural requirements.
