"Excellent communication and very accommodating. They squeezed me in on the same day that I called for a sump pump replacement and they even had a brand new top quality pump on them to install right away. Best of all, the cost was reasonable."

"I found Ralph on Angie's list and contracted him for a clogged drain. I was pleased that he responded quickly and he took care of 2 clogged shower drains. The following week, my hot water heater broke and Ralph called back five minutes after I sent him a text. He replaced it with a superior model (which cost only a little more than the cheap model that I had and he explained the features which made it superior. I later found a YouTube video which confirmed everything that he said). The warranty was better also. He came back the following day to replace two toilets which had been causing leaks in my kitchen ceiling. I'm very happy with my new water efficient toilets which flush with more force than the previous ones, and, no more leaks! While Ralph was replacing my water heater, he noted problems with the installation of my 35 year old boiler and pointed out issues that a more modern and energy efficient boiler would address. There was no hard sell, just a matter of fact recommendation that I might consider replacing it before next winter. I've been hiring contractors for the past 22 years, and I'm impressed by Ralph's knowledge, experience and professionalism. If you call for service, you will get Ralph himself, not a random plumber that a larger company will send. I've already booked Ralph again for my broken sump pump!"

"They explained their system and the installation process in detail. They were very flexible and worked with our schedule to finish installation of French drain system before sale of house. Extra foundation work was needed, and they did that as fast as possible"

"I had their technician (Julian) hook up & tested my pool pump, also fix a clogged toilet. Julian was very thorough and explained everything that needed to be done through the entire job. Couldn’t be more happier with their service, I do find their price is on the high side, however I would definitely recommend & hire them again as not all plumbers or even pool company would come & hook up existing pump"

"I contacted Angies List when my sewage pumps stopped working. First Class called me immediately. Eric was so friendly and knowledgable. He told me that he thought it was an electrical problem to get more than one opinion. I did and the first plumber came and left after telling me to call an electrician. I called First Class back, and Eric sent Glen right over. He was so thorough and said that they would check the pumps and the electrical. I was given an estimate for one pump and for two pumps. it turns out that one was working and the other wasn't. Chris spent hours and hours the Friday before Memorial Day weekend trying to figure out why things weren't working. He and Glen were determined to help me. It turns out that my control panel was wired all wrong and it burned out the one pump. The saga continued involving hours and hours of Chris and Glen's time. They never stopped until everything was working. Chris went above and beyond leaving notes on the control panel for the future to ensure anyone that touches the panel or pumps does it correctly. I was panicked that my bill was going to skyrocket. But not with First Class!! They stuck to their word and their original estimate. Eric, Glen, and Chris took such good care or me!! They are honest, hard-working guys, and tradesmen like them are hard to find! I highly recommend them. I wouldn't hesitate to call upon them again!! They were fantastic!!"

FAQs for sump pump or interior foundation drains installation projects in Fair Lawn, NJ

Most residential pumps draw approximately 1,300 to 2,900 watts when they first start, then settle at roughly 800 to 1,050 watts during normal operation. The exact number depends on the motor’s horsepower and how often the float switch tells the pump to run. Even at the high end, the electricity cost is minor compared with the expense of cleaning up a flooded basement.

Grab a ruler and an empty 18‑inch‑wide pit. During a steady rain, time how much the water rises in one minute. Multiply that depth (in inches) by 60 to calculate gallons per hour, then add 50% for safety. If the result tops 2,100 gallons per hour—about 35 gallons a minute—you’ll need a 3/4‑horsepower unit. Anything lower, and a 1/3- or 1/2-horsepower pump should do the trick.

Loud rattling, constant cycling, or shuddering vibrations are the pump’s way of telling you it’s on its last legs. Musty smells, higher electric bills, and visible rust are other red flags. If the unit is 10 years old or older and exhibits any of these symptoms, replace it before the next heavy rain turns your basement into a wading pool.

You don’t have to hire a licensed plumber, but you should still bring in someone who installs sump pumps for a living—whether that’s a plumber, basement‑waterproofing specialist, or experienced handyman. They know the local codes, can wire the pump safely, and will test the system before they leave. Skipping professional help might void the warranty and could leave you with a pump that fails when you need it most.

Not every basement needs a pump, but if your home sits in a floodplain, has a high water table, or has ever taken on water during a storm, a sump pump is inexpensive insurance. For basements that only struggle with condensation or the occasional damp spot, sealing cracks and improving drainage may be all that is needed.
