"I contacted Wireworx to provide an estimate to repair some damaged interior wall wiring (approximately 6 120 volt wires) that serviced the second floor of my house. The job had the added challenge of repairing wires that went down through the floorplate of the second story wall to the the first story. Chris came out, surveyed the damage and then told me “No problem, we can so this”. He provided me an estimate via email that included replacing or splicing the damaged wiring. Splicing! Who knew!? I always thought that you had to replace damaged wirng but there is now a UL rated splice kit for inteiror walls. What a time and cost savings! We schedued the work for the follwing week and Tim showed up right on time and got right to work. The splice kits worked great!. The only challenge was locating BOTH wires that went down through the floorplate. While I had opened up the wall (sure enough, two wires coming thrugh the top plate) only one of the wires came through at that point. SO, the search was on for the other wire. Tim was very apologetic about having to add two small (4”x4”) holes in the cieling to find the other wire. No worries there, patching the holes is no problem since he was very careful when he made them. Once the wires were located all of the repairs and clean up was completed in less that a coiple of hours. The whole process - contactng Wireworx, having Chris come out to estimate the work, getting and approving the estimate, and Tim coming out to do the repairs was extremley easiy>. Chris and Time were extremely courtious and professional, and the work is top notch. I highly recommend Wireworx!"

"John came in and hooked up the wires, added switches for the recessed lights in the kitchen. He even prewired for an island hood vent... another project of mine later down the road. He did the work quickly and cleaned up well. I would use them again for another electrical projects in the near future."

"Chesapeake electrical just finished replacing an outlet on our 32 year old home. They also inspected the whole electrical system and offered options to upgrade our house to current standards. The technician, Brian, was very experienced and fixed our problem right away. Too many Christmas lights, too much recent rain and trying to charge an electric car on a 110 line! They came out the day after we called, the scheduler, Jackie, was very personable and determined to get this ordeal over for us. Our immediate problem was not too complicated but I can see down the road we may need more substantial electric repairs and we will be calling Chesapeake electrical for what we need. I recommend everything about their operation. Last comment and probably the most important comments moment, the cost was very reasonable. For someone who almost never uses an electrician, we are glad we found Chesapeake electrical. John and Jane, Ellicott City"

"OK. They charged for a service call in addition to the cost of the replacement part and installation. Other service providers waive the cost of the service call if you have them fix the problem on the spot."

Small jobs welcome

"Alex listened to my description of the electrical problems I wanted repaired and then efficiently diagnosed the problems and provided an estimate for the repairs. I agreed to the estimate and Alex did the work as proposed. I definitely recommend this company and specifically the electrician Alex. Thank you, Scott Stangle"

"The All-In Electric team was amazing. Very thorough and very fast running an outside line (underground) to my shed and installing sub-panel for lights and outlets with room to grow as needed. I would definitely hire again."

"Everything went great. The only reason I didn't give an A for quality is that they had to leave holes in my wall and ceiling tile to run the speaker wires. I did agree to this after it was explained how they would have to run the wires, but I haven't figured out how to fix the ceiling tile yet. So I would say it would be nice if that weren't the case and that it wasn't so destructive to do the work and/or it would be repaired as part of the service offered. I would still highly recommend."

FAQs for generator repair projects in Hanover, MD

There is often some confusion about the type of work these professionals do. They only work on electrical systems such as outlets, lighting fixtures and electrical panels – they aren’t appliance repairmen.

There are three types of electricians: Master, Journeyman and Apprentice. Electrical licensing varies quite a bit by state. Some have licenses for apprentices and some do not. Some have a master’s rank while others stop at journeyman. Despite the differences, they all require a minimum amount of experience and usually classroom time.

  • Apprentice electricians aren’t usually licensed and spend 4 years learning the trade. Throughout that time, they work on a wide range of projects to learn to become a Journeyman. They’ll do basic work like installing fixtures and replacing outlets all the way to assisting in wiring a home. Regardless of the type of project, they must always be supervised by a Journeyman or Master electrician.

  • Journeymen work without supervision. In a few states, this is the highest level available and they can do all levels of work from wiring a new home to installing a light. In some states, they need a separate electrical contractor license to run a business. In places with a master’s level, a journeyman can do all work besides design new electrical systems.

  • Master electricians usually manage a shop, design new electrical systems in new construction and oversee both Journeyman and Apprentices. They typically bid new projects. Though they focus on larger projects, it’s not unheard of for a homeowner to request a Master Electrician for a house call. If you do, expect to spend up to 25% more for the visit.

Generally, you don’t tip electricians, but that’s not to say they don’t appreciate it if you do. You can offer them something to drink or eat, like coffee and donuts. Most will appreciate it if you do.

The education and certifications required to become an electrician vary by state, though they generally follow this list:

  1. Apprentice

    • Does not always require a license depending on the state.

    • Learns on the job under Journeyman and Master Electricians.

    • Usually needs 4 years on-the-job training before they can test for a Journeyman license. Many states also require a technical degree to advance.

    • Always require supervision.

  2. Journeyman

    • Needs between 8,000 to 10,000 hours of on-the-job training and usually 500 to 1,000 hours of classroom experience.

    • Can usually supervise apprentices.

    • They can diagnose and repair electrical problems.

  3. Master

    • Achieved after an additional two years (4,000 hours) working as a Journeyman and taking the Master Electrician Exam.

    • Besides diagnosing and repairing electrical systems, they also design them. In most places they run shops and inspect Journeyman and Apprentice work.

    • Not a recognized rank in all states.

  4. Electrical Contractor License is an optional license in some states for a Master Electrician to run a business. Some states have this instead of the Master license.

Electricians make an average of $26 per hour but it ranges with experience and licensing. An apprentice may make about half that while a Master Electrician may hit closer to $40 per hour. This figure represents how much they make; not how much they bill. Their salary is only one component of their costs. They must also figure in overhead, taxes, equipment, insurance and several other expenses.

Leave electrical work to the professionals. Electrical systems are complex and potentially hazardous when not handled and installed correctly. If it were easy, it wouldn’t take 4 years to become a journeyman or 6 years for a master’s license. If you are determined to forge ahead yourself, understand home electrical safety before beginning any project.Even for simple common electrical projects, a licensed pro is best. Not only is it safer, but contractors guarantee and insure their work. Hire a professional to keep your home’s electrical systems functioning properly and safely.
