Rather than just presuming the furnace was dead or even the problem, Dave poked around. He discovered the smoke was from the fireplace/chimey and the furnace turning on had pulled air from the chimney, reignited a smoldering log, and then filled the house with smoke. The problem was with the chimney all along, but Dave/Columbia did not charge me anything for the trip to Portland---or for diagnosing the problem---even when I called later to offer. Everyone involved was top notch from Steve (the owner) to Morgan and Terry (the hard-working technicians who worked tirelessly in 30-degree rainy weather) and Tom the apprentice. They did an excellent job, didn't cut corners, and based on the research I did (from a lay person's perspective), I feel like the price was fair. I signed the line for a completely new heat pump/air handler/thermostat package. Everyone from the sales estimator to the installers to the service technicians were very motivated to do their best. It was not “plug and play” however - the new system needed multiple service techs to even get the system fired up and working. Multiple problems coming from mistakes either from the factory product or the installers did not bode well for my ten Grand purchase!
