New York A/C Systems

Choosing an air conditioning unit can be a daunting process. With dozens of manufacturers producing hundreds of models of air conditioning, many of which may be viable units for your home or apartment. Capacity and energy-efficiency are only the two most commonly cited factors in choosing an air conditioning unit. Reliability, longevity, and corresponding warranties are also important for homeowners, especially those who dread the prospect of picking out major home appliances and installations. By making a wise air conditioning selection, you can once again take for granted a comfortable home during the sweltering summer months.

A/C Units

Traditional Central Air: These air conditioning units still reign in the residential air conditioning market. Better energy-efficient air conditioning units and lower installation costs still hold sway over the typical homeowner. At the same time, if you already own an air conditioner, you should keep a watchful eye on it and your summer utility bills and you should be ready to pull the trigger on a new unit when it comes time. Likewise, if you're installing central air for the first time, don't think you can get away with an older or less energy-efficient unit just because the New York heat wave is strictly isolated to the summer months. Newer models will still pay for themselves in the long run, providing consistently cheaper air conditioning for a longer time.

Window Air Conditioning: Generally considered an also-ran in the competition for residential air conditioning, in New York, window air conditioning solicits just as many requests as central air. The reason for this anomalous popularity is easy to understand. A small apartment in a building without central air is an all-too-common situation in New York. Not only does a window air conditioning make the most sense, it's often the only answer for New Yorkers. Plus, even tenants who don't own their own residence can take their portable, window air conditioning unit when their lease runs out.

Alternative Air Conditioning: If you've got the money to invest in the latest air conditioning technology, you will see significant energy savings, all but eliminate your utility bills, and be part of the national drive to reduce our country's energy dependence. High-capacity heat pumps, geothermal heat pumps, and solar panels are some of the more reliable and well-tested innovations, but new and improved air conditioning arrives on the scene each and every year.

Cost of Installation
These decisions will naturally determine how much your New York air conditioning installation will cost. Central air conditioning systems costs, on average, about $7,000 in New York, although this number can be a dubious one as a predictor for your home. Recently, we've seen projects as low as $4,000 and as high as $14,000. Certainly, $10,000-$20,000 isn't unheard of for high-end, alternative air conditioning solutions, although often these costs have as much to do with difficulty of retrofitting your home with types of air conditioning not previously intended for your dwelling. Sometimes this process is surprisingly easy; other times it's prohibitively difficult. Window air conditioning units, while not practical for full-sized homes, can be purchased and installed for just a few hundred dollars.

HVAC Contractors
Not only do you need to find someone to install your air conditioning, whether it's central air, a window unit, or an alternative form of air conditioning, finding the right New York air conditioning contractor will give the best source for professional, unbiased advice about which air conditioning system and unit is right for your home or apartment. HomeAdvisor puts every contractor in our database through a rigorous ten-step screening process, meaning you can trust that the people we put you in touch with meet the basic standards of professional credentials and expertise. Moreover, our quality-controlled, online customer ratings and reviews section will allow you to see what other New York homeowners have thought about their experience with individual contractors. These reviews also provide strong incentive for contractors to go above and beyond your expectations from costs to advice to careful consideration of your daily activities during the installation process.

Comment: I need the old unit carefully removed because there may be water in the unit which would have to be drained. It would have to be taken downstairs and outside. The window is old and the old unit had been sealed around the edges so that has to be dealt with as well. I need some additional wood, or something, to make sure that the sides of the new unit are set up to keep more hot air out than the current unit. Pus some wood underneath the unit to keep the pigeons away. This is a walkup. Three angled flights (with landings every six steps to rest). If I get the new unit on-line, there's a possibility that UPS would leave it in the lobby instead of coming up the stairs. If that happens, I'd need you to carry it upstairs.

Comment: This is a split system HIVAC in an apartment. There is a leek in the pipe connecting the compressor with the blower. I would lik to get the connection just out side the plywood covered window where the pipe comes into the apartment and also get the ductwork cleaned.
