Last year, earlier this year and last week my furnace would short cycle and not put out any heat (furnace is only four years old and is a high efficiency unit.) The problem was the condensation in  air intake pipe was freezing and causing a blockage. Previous technicians from Ralph's heating (installer of unit) had come out twice last heating season and defrosted the pipe.

After evaluating the situation Shawn from Porterhouse heating established that the intake pipe was sucking in the moist air from the outtake pipe and was freezing up. We contacted Ralph's who stated that the freezing was due to the extreme weather and not the positioning of the pipes. The position of the installed pipes didn't follow any of the configurations that were in the installation manual. (which would have kept the air from being sucked into the intake pipe)

Shawn's solution was to cut the pipe inside the basement so that it would take in air from the basement instead of outside. Furnace has been working like a champ.

I am very grateful to Shawn, that he was able to solve the problem.. I called on Thursday 1/8 to make an appt. for routine cleaning. Got the appt for the next day, Friday 1/9. The furnace starting acting up right after I called him and by Friday night the heat wouldn't go over 65. He came out and cleaned the furnace, it was working fine but in the evening it started short cycling and wouldn't come all the way on until the temp was down to 59. I sent a text to Shawn at midnight to let him know what was going on. He called back Saturday morning and came out that morning.

I explained to him about the previous problem with the frozen pipe and when he checked it he found it to be frozen. He gave me two options , cut the pipe inside (regular service charge) or redo the pipes (several hundred dollars). After completing the work he asked me to let him know during the day how things were working and if necessary he would come back on Sunday at no charge if I was still having a problem. Not many technicians would be willing to come out on a Sunday.

Jim is awesome. We called, he came (on time), and conquered our issues ? for a reasonable price to boot! I called him because our indoor forced air unit was leaking water. In the process of clearing some debris from the drainage tube running from the evaporator coils to the floor drain, we found some mold growing in an old unused humidifier unit connected to the furnace. The unit was not supposed to have water running to it, but my plumbers turned it on anyway and I did not realize (a story for another day). After having kids perpetually sick all winter long, I wanted that unit immediately removed. Despite a busy schedule, Jim obliged, ran out to get sheet metal that he didn't have in the truck and removed the unit / patched up the hole where it was. We had a mold and air quality test done immediately afterwards to make sure nothing made it's way out of the humidifier unit ? all good on that front :)

6/11/2015: 
I'd like to give an update on my situation. My unit began leaking again from the area near the evaporator coils the day after Jim was first here. It leaked much less now, but I had him come back out to investigate the matter further. After checking the flexible drain pipe from the indoor unit, Jim said we should install new indoor evaporator coils and a new outdoor cooling unit. I was a little surprised because our current unit runs very, very well. It is old, but is historically a long-lasting model (as mentioned by every A/C guy that has ever stepped foot in our home). Our neighbors actually have the same unit as us and it runs just as well for them.

So I told Jim that I would have to think about such a large expense. After he left, I turned to Google to triple-check any reasons why my unit might be leaking. After some digging around, I learned that dirty evaporator coils might be the culprit. So I got my screw gun out and removed some of the sheet metal panels in order to access the evaporator coils. Low and behold, I found .25" of black dust and cat hair caked onto the under side of the coils. I cleaned the coils with a soft bristle brush, turned the unit back on, and voila, it stopped leaking! This is presumably because the air flow was much better over the coils now and they stopped freezing and blocking normal drainage. 

I can't help feeling that Jim should have at least mentioned to me that the evaporator coils could be an issue and that cleaning them was an option before wanting to install a new outdoor cooling unit / new indoor evaporator coils that was ball-parked at $3,000.00. No doubt we will probably need a new unit within five years, but the fact is, it still runs very well. 

Jim is a very nice and friendly serviceman. All services that he did perform he performed very well. It's what he didn't do that was disappointing and is my reason for giving him an overall rating of 'C'.

Jim unexpectedly called us last night to check in on our unit. He said that he was thinking about our issue and that it dawned on him that the evaporator coils might need to be cleaned. I'm changing the overall score to a "B".

What a wonderful idea and I cannot express how happy I am with this choice. It is a win-win deal for me and the company. I am a very happy camper with my choice of this company."
