"I would HIGHLY recommend Chimney Cricket. I thought the price quote was a bit high on the front end but when I actually saw how extensive the work was it was money well spent. Phil and Brooklyn showed up right on time, were very professional, worked for 8 hours straight with normal breaks and kept the area as clean as possible as they went. Phil told me he has been in this line of work since 1990 and it was obvious he knew his stuff. On the front end Peter and Ginger did a great job with the appointment setting and flexibility that was needed negotiating the contract. I had been using another fireplace company for 10 years who stopped returning calls. Glad I stumbled upon Chimney Cricket on Angie's List. All in all this company has my full endorsement."

"I was impressed, and pleased by the professionalism of the men who came to repair our pellet stove. The stove was old , and we ended up buying a new one. It was made simple by Chris. Within a short amount time he found the stove we wanted , set up a payment plan. Chris went beyond and above to help us. When the stove was installed, again professional , and polite gentleman, Steve and Adrian did a fine job. Now we have a solid company to go to for repairs , and service. Thank you to all at Chimney Experts for a job well done."

"We cannot begin to describe how incredibly pleased we were with Patrick and his cohort, Nick. Consummate professionals AND craftsmen, they worked swiftly yet were comprehensive in effort and scope. Patrick was completely transparent in what he was thinking and believing and explained his reasoning thoroughly, both in the estimate process and later, in this job that ended up having more problems than we anticipated and required additional work and time. he was collegial, pleasant and humble. he and Nick were a pleasure to have at our house. as for the jobs themselves, he was able to work with our old chimney and provided further protection after his work of repairing and repointing was finished . his idea about how to handle the base of the chimney and make it look stunning and different by adding a heavy copper facing that slightly flared out as it met our natural stone patio, was an incredible idea that ended up being as incredible looking as it sounded when he proposed it after discussing with us our ideas about aesthetics and discussing our ideas and priorities. and as for the second job, what Patrick and Nick ended up doing was to fully dig out and remove the old cinder block walls, leaving ample space for placing a waterproof barrier where the new cinder blocks they installed met the soil of the grounds, and then backfilling, after filling each block with concrete. in addition, they took out the original framework of the old screen door that led directly into the basement, and put in a new frame for a new door (that we will have to get installed in the near future) made of pressure treated lumber for additional weather and insect protection. they took out and rebuilt the lintel area over the doors, and insulated this and the areas behind the new framework as well. they then capped off the new lintel area with wood like PVC board, which we will paint to match the Cotswold Cottage look of this unique home. they also dug out and laid concrete at the head of the new Bilco doors where none existed before. and finally, they installed the new Bilco doors, which, because of the White House tariffs on steel, became several hundred dollars more expensive than when we signed the work order. The public needs to know that when you hire this wonderful man, you are getting a superb craftsman, an excellent thinker, a great worker, an ethical individual, and someone who cares deeply about his work and his customers and will do whatever has to be done to make the owner happy, and the job one to be proud of. And his choice of an equally wonderful and skilled worker, his friend and longtime associate (Nick) who has many many years in this field, is also an indication of excellent judgement. Nick himself was also a pleasure to work with and to know. By the end of this job, we felt like Patrick and Nick were longtime friends with amazing skills. our only regret is that we cannot use this magnificent company for anything in the near future. you will not regret hiring them."

FAQs for fireplace and wood stove service projects in Newtown Square, PA

Start with a professional inspection. If damage is limited to a few bricks or the crown, a targeted repair helps keep costs and disruption to a minimum. Severe leaning, widespread mortar failure, or major fire damage usually signals it’s time for a complete teardown and rebuild. Your contractor will outline both price tags, but remember that rebuilding a failing stack is often cheaper than repeated patch jobs and the water leaks or fire hazards they allow.

Cracks provide water with an easy path into the masonry, weakening the bricks and mortar and increasing the risk of collapse or fire. Gaps can also let hot gases and sparks escape into attic spaces. Call a chimney pro as soon as you see cracking so they can seal small joints or recommend a larger rebuild before minor damage turns into a costly emergency.

Smoke rolling back into the room often indicates a blocked flue, a broken damper, or a drafting issue. Have a sweep inspect the damper, flue liner, and any obstructions right away. Most fixes involve clearing debris, repairing the liner, or adjusting the damper so the fireplace pulls air correctly. Don’t light another fire until a professional pinpoints the cause and confirms your system is venting safely.

Most policies cover chimney repairs caused by a sudden, covered event, such as lightning, a fallen tree, or a house fire. They won’t cover damage that stems from neglected maintenance or everyday wear. Review your policy or contact your agent before scheduling work to determine what documentation your insurer requires and what costs you will be responsible for.

Component life spans vary. Clay tile or cast-in-place liners last close to 50 years, while stainless-steel liners last 15 to 20 years. Mortar requires attention every 25 to 30 years, while crowns last 50 to 75 years. Use these numbers as a maintenance roadmap: schedule regular inspections, budget for future upgrades, and replace parts before age-related cracks develop into more significant problems.
