"Our new backyard, completed by Rock N Block turned out AMAZING! We haven’t used our backyard for almost 10 years because it was in major need of an upgrade. Brandon came out and helped us design a winner. Entire job was done in 3 days. Great value, and amazing service. Thank you so much!!"

"Pros: Very prompt. Took care to protect carpet and furniture. Thorough and friendly. Made recommendations for approximately $800 of repair work. Cons: Service person took pieces of concrete off the chimney cap to show me the cap was crumbling (I would have preferred he just tell me). Decided not to reuse service only because of my feelings about the chimney cap. He did a great job cleaning the chimney.

"Fireplace Door Guy definitely exceeded our expectations. Not only was Danny (the owner) professional and responsive, the quality of workmanship was truly artwork. Our custom fireplace door is now the centerpiece of our main living room. We were so pleased with the door, within a month we ordered a 2nd door for our bedroom fireplace. Thank you Danny"

"Chris came out and gave me an estimate of $1500 to cover a large brick fireplace and finish a wall on the other side of my kitchen. The existing wall was 7' tall, but the ceilings are sloped and vaulted, so it was a little tricky to make it look "original". It took his two workmen about 2 1/2 days to complete the work. They were very conscientious about keeping the area as clean as possible, avoided sanding since my kitchen opens into the bedroom hallway and living room with little way to hang plastic or anything to keep the dust contained. There was an additional cost due to my decision to extend the wall further than originally discussed and that cost was based on time and materials. Jesse and Jason were friendly and professional and I was comfortable having them in my home. They even let me know when they thought it was safe to let my cat out of the bedroom (when they wouldn't need to be going in and out, risking his 'escape'). "

"I hadn't used my condo's fireplace in the 7 years I owned my condo. I am going to be renting it out so wanted to make sure everything was ok. The technician came over on time (even earlier) and inspected the chimney. It turned out that no cleaning was needed. I was only charged for the inspection and even used the Angie's List coupon. He gave me some advice on screens to use in front of the fireplace and referred me to a vendor."

"I had a total of three bids to do this work. I am a retired professional engineer so I wrote detailed specifications for this project and I am well acquainted with what it takes to ensure getting a quality construction project. I was very pleased with T. F. Larkin (Tim) when he arrived to make his estimate. During our interview, Tim made several design suggestions which revealed to me his creative talents which were not apparent from my two previous bidders. We have a town home with an entry, kitchen, office/den, dining/living room (14 foot ceilings), master bedroom, master bath, guest bedroom, guest bath and a hall connecting the bedrooms and living room. For our living/dining room Tim suggested doing a triple stacked crown moulding which is one of his artistic specialties since this would high light our 14 foot high ceilings which it certainly did. He also added artistic mouldings around our glassed in bar, kitchen, master bedroom floor to ceiling drape and both baths. In the hallway was an attic access which most contractors just do in an ordinary way. However, Tim did a creative design that made the attic access look as if it were hewn out of the ceiling like and art piece. I specified that all the moulding materials be painted with two coats prior to installation and caulking and touch up painting after installation. His crew of six first worked for 5 days in January then returned for one day on April 10th to complete some base mouldings that had to be done separately because of large furniture prices that had to be disassembled, moved then reassembled by another contractor. Tim's crew of 6 were very professional and very careful to protect our furnishings and our many art pieces. During the final touch up his crew used lights fastened to their hats to inspect and make sure all defects were corrected. Following this installation, I used a painting contractor recommended by Tim to paint all of the interior with 10 colors (12 different paints) which turned out exceptionally well also.
Over the years I have been involved in more than two dozens remodeling projects at a larger home we lived in for 26 years and our current town home. At the conclusion of this job, I told Tim it was the best $10,000 that I have ever spent on a remodeling project.

Start with a professional inspection. If damage is limited to a few bricks or the crown, a targeted repair helps keep costs and disruption to a minimum. Severe leaning, widespread mortar failure, or major fire damage usually signals it’s time for a complete teardown and rebuild. Your contractor will outline both price tags, but remember that rebuilding a failing stack is often cheaper than repeated patch jobs and the water leaks or fire hazards they allow.
Cracks provide water with an easy path into the masonry, weakening the bricks and mortar and increasing the risk of collapse or fire. Gaps can also let hot gases and sparks escape into attic spaces. Call a chimney pro as soon as you see cracking so they can seal small joints or recommend a larger rebuild before minor damage turns into a costly emergency.
Smoke rolling back into the room often indicates a blocked flue, a broken damper, or a drafting issue. Have a sweep inspect the damper, flue liner, and any obstructions right away. Most fixes involve clearing debris, repairing the liner, or adjusting the damper so the fireplace pulls air correctly. Don’t light another fire until a professional pinpoints the cause and confirms your system is venting safely.
Most policies cover chimney repairs caused by a sudden, covered event, such as lightning, a fallen tree, or a house fire. They won’t cover damage that stems from neglected maintenance or everyday wear. Review your policy or contact your agent before scheduling work to determine what documentation your insurer requires and what costs you will be responsible for.
Component life spans vary. Clay tile or cast-in-place liners last close to 50 years, while stainless-steel liners last 15 to 20 years. Mortar requires attention every 25 to 30 years, while crowns last 50 to 75 years. Use these numbers as a maintenance roadmap: schedule regular inspections, budget for future upgrades, and replace parts before age-related cracks develop into more significant problems.
